People see long on, or deep fielders in general as a defensive mechanism to spin bowling. This is not actually true. Putting a fielder back takes out one of the batsman's shots, and requires him to think of another area if he wishes to hit in the air.

Not when you're 8/80 bowling at a #8 though. It's just an obvious give-the-single mechanism and it's ****.

This is true. Murali for one loved bowling to in-out fields in tests.
