**Official** Sri Lanka in England / Scotland - 2011

the crap weather means that lankans could well escape with a draw in this match. if that were to happen, it would mean that a clearly outmatched lankan team came with a session of drawing the series! quite amazing and obviously not a good state of affairs in terms of results being a decent reflection of the contests.

Steady on. In both matches they've score more than 400 in 1st innings. We might have to consider ourselves lucky to win the series, after they had one mad session.

On a serious note, do they really deserve their high avgs?
To be fair, a player's average isn't like an award betowed by the academy; it is what it is.

Mehela's actually gone ok in blighty previously too, so maybe he's just not in prime nick or age is catching up with him. He is thirty-four after all and has a lot of tests under his belt. All his dismissals seem to have been similar this series tho; squared up on the backfoot and nicking off, so he could have a flaw that becomes exaggerated with extreme movement that he might get away with on more placid tracks.

Kumar's never done much here ever tho, which is odd for such a stylish batsman but it does happen sometimes. Doug Walters, by repute with a dreamy technique, has an absolutely abysmal record in England when compared to his overall figures.

Samaraweera, runs yesterday notwithstanding, looks the player with the flattering average. I've never seen a man who's averaged 50+ over such a long time appear to have so little about them.

But is that a fair reflection of the series? 2-0 would seem to be a fairer one of this one.

For example, the 2007 series coreline against the Indians was a fair reflection of the series. The Indians were super lucky to escape with a draw at Lords. But they did win convincingly at Trentbridge. And then completely dominated the Oval test but played safe and didn't quite press for a victory by enforcing a followon. Maybe 2-1 might have been a fairer reflection of that one.

A series result isn't an award bestowed by the academy either- it is what it is. If you only bowl Sri Lanka out twice in one of the three games then I can't see how you could conclude that 2-0 would be a fairer reflection of the series.

difference between Samaraweera's away and home avg is 20.. dont know any body with avg above 50 in test cricket have such a huge difference

1-0 or a 0-0 would be fair reflections of this series so far. We may have the more threatening bowlers, but they've quite frankly bowled crap most of the time.

Mussey?

However more intersting - and probably more alarming - would be outside the subcontinent vs. within.

Sri Lankan batsmen deserve their averages but it is fair to question what those numbers would look like if the proportion of home vs. away games on their career records had been similar to what Indian batsmen have. It is a strange anomaly because many pitches in SL are among the more bowler-friendly ones in the subcontinent. These guys certainly aren't FTBs, but seem to have a major problem adapting to conditions abroad.

might have to do something with the low number of games they play outside the subcontinent. very little practice in the different conditions......saf, oz, england etc. only partly explains it, of course.

it is what it is because of the weather, if we had of had good weather throughout, I think it's fair to say it could of been 2-0 atm.
