**Official** Sri Lanka in England / Scotland - 2011

Guess lunch may be a bit early for a declaration. Presumably we'd win 2 overs by doing this?
Yes if we declare during the afternoon session, which is expected, we would lose two overs for the turnaround, where as we'd lose none by declaring at lunch.

Think there is currently 80 overs left in the day, let's see how many we can get in the next 18 overs, realistically with the right approach, maybe 100 runs, leaving 60 overs for SL needing about 340.

This declaration talk is doing my head in.

When you're leading in a series, there is absolutely no point in being generous with a declaration. Strauss should only declare once England reach the point where losing the game is extremely unlikely.

Gower is right to be critical of Strauss' declarations in the West Indies, as we were behind in that series and should have been willing to risk defeat more in order to try and win the Tests, but with a 1-0 series lead and 1 Test to go, risking defeat is absolutely pointless.

So what is safe then ? What is a generous declaration ? No-one is suggesting setting SL 250 in 60 overs, so when is the game safe, when we have a lead of 450 but only 30 overs left in the day ?

Also, if I was Strauss, I wouldn't be declaring until Pietersen has scored a ton.
I hope Strauss would let KP know when he was hoping to declare and if he wants his ton and doesn't have a lot of time to do so, then he'll have to get on with it. Simple as. This game is bigger than one man's landmark.

Agreed, but if Pietersen is sitting at 98* when the declaration time rolls round, Strauss should be prepared to let Pietersen hit his ton.

A confident, on form Pietersen for the remainder of the summer IMO is more important than this game.

Well lloyd the moron is talking about setting 270.

350 for me, but Cook is starting to test my patience and now 350 looks a long way away...

Yes, I can understand letting him get through to his ton. Never been one for landmarks though personally, 98 not out or 100 not out, unless you win by two runs, don't see the big issue. But I appreciate not everyone sees it that way.

What about overs remaining though, which is key to give ourselves enough time to bowl them out. If it means leaving only 40 overs, you'd be happy as long as we got the 350 lead ?

Well this last half hour has been utterly pathetic and ridiculous so I don't know what to suggest now.
