Great knock from Jos. Such a special player. Root needs to get his 100 now, been an anchor innings but need to get us past 310.

Root didn't look very good there, but 93 from 106 on a slowish pitch batting mainly against spin is a good effort. We are still a team who can collapse against spin so don't mind Root just knocking it around to let the hitters do their job at the end.

Bandara bowled absolute pus. These guys aren't going to win a game vs. Eng all tour at this rate.

Mathews just got absolutely bitch slapped by Plunkett just then. Good bowling.

Game over, change the channel.

Congrats to England on a thoroughly deserved series victory.don't think we will win a single game this tour..give this team ( minus maharoof) a year and we will be competitive again..

Nowhere near. Can't see Moeen getting dropped for the Pakistan series. Rashid will probably play in Bangladesh and India though alongside Moeen.
If Borthwick gets called up for the test series vs Pakistan I think they may have an impact on who plays as the specialist spinner in India. They may well go for a specialist left-armer and have Borthwick and Ali to play a support role. I like Rashid in ODIs as he keeps a batsman guessing. I wasn't so convinced in tests as particularly in the UAe the batsmen seemed content to defend against him and wait for the ball he drags short every 12 balls or so. I'm not sure he'll ever be a bowler who can build pressure in the longer form of the game - I hope I'm proved wrong as he is quite entertaining to watch.

Question is who would be the specialist slow left armer in that circumstances?
Quite. I suspect that Edmonds or Tufnell could still do a better job than one or two of the current SLA candidates.

Obviously the hope is that Rashid will develop into something rather better than what we saw in the UAE. It could happen, but I'm not nearly knowledgeable enough to suggest whether his recent performances indicate an overall improvement.

Does Borthwick even bowl enough for his leggies to be considered an option nowadays?

I think he's taken 10 wickets plus this year, he's certainly bowled more often than last season. He's definitely not an option to be used solely as a specialist spinner and leaks runs.

So in all honesty there's one front line option and we don't know how he'd react a second time following his harrowing debut. The other 2 are part time at best and definitely no better then Moeen

A year or two ago I would of thought it was fairly ludicrous to play Rashid as your only spinner (as I said at the time of the WI 2015 tour). However I'd seriously be considering Rashid over Ali for these Pakistan tests. Ali just looks lost as a bowler. No plans, no consistency, no improvement. Rashid seems to be bowling as well as he ever has. It might not be good enough still but imo I'd be giving him serious consideration. The 4 seamers they will play does allow them a little freedom in that regard.

Ali is comfortably the better bat imo but I'm not overly concerned in that regard as there is plenty of batting and Rashid is certainly not a bad bat. Of more importance now is finding someone who they can have some confidence in going into the winter tests in Bangladesh and India.
