Send that old random guy who went into the comm box out to skipper
Henry Blofeld? It's a thought, I suppose.

Obviously Bell doesn't look like captaincy material, but you just don't know. People said the same about Gooch years ago, and we got a couple of decent years out of him. Ditto Vaughan, actually. We really have no idea about the alternatives, whereas we do know a lot about Cook.

That being said, it was hardly Cook's fault that Anderson and Broad, two vastly experienced bowlers, bowled such utter garbage on Days 3 & 4. And they weren't great at the start of Day 1, actually, a fact which is obscured by the 3rd session. Similar story on Day 5 at Lord's, come to think of it.
Nor is it Cook's fault that the fielding's been so rotten.

What goes around comes around, I suppose. If they really did think it was a good idea to piss over the Oval pitch last summer, maybe it's karma that the cricketing gods have been pissing all over them ever since.

Not playing shots is great when the pitch is completely flat and there's no assistance from spinners. Not quite so true here, don't think you can just deadbat against Herath.
