Always find it disappointing to see a great bowler treated as a stock rather than strike bowler.

There have to be times when shorter spells from either end would be more effective than just chucking him the ball and letting him bowl for the entire innings

Agreed. But except for Vaas (sometimes) its usually the case that no-one else looks even mildly threatening.
