***Official*** Sri Lanka in Australia

Pratters

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
I am surprised he said in his interview that Australia as a country have played him better....That's only partly True...Australia in Australia have played him well...Australia in Sri Lanka ended up giving him 28 wickets in a 3 Test series last time around ...and I think India have been the better Team to play him in Sri Lanka...someone can dig the stats up...
Murali was a very average bowler earlier in his career. India in particular used to play him like a kid bowler. Huge off spins but the same ball for time immemorial. So he had a very average record versus India earlier in his career. Once Murali became the lethal bowler, particularly with his doosra, India wasn't able to play him that well.

Till 1998:

v India 9 459.3 1236 28 5/162 7/195 44.14 2.68 98.4 1 0

After 1998:

filtered 6 336.1 940 39 8/87 11/196 24.10 2.79 51.7 3 1

The marked change can be seen as a one day bowler too. Notice the declining trend of the average over the years.

India have had a lot of troubles playing Murali, much more than Australia and it shouldn't come as a surprise to you that he rates Australia's ability to play him higher.

Interesting.

However, there was one series early in his career where he did fairly well considering. I cant remember which year it was (the same series though where I think Kapil finally passed Hadlee for the record). But all Murali had was the big spinning offie and he took (from memory) 12 wickets in 3 tests (3 innings as SL lost all the tests by an innings) for an avg of 35 at a SR of 75. Doosra or not, it was his most successful series in India until the last one where he took 15 wickets in the 3 tests including that spell of 7-fer. Sometimes I miss the old big off spinning Murali - often too bowls too straight at right handers these days, imo.

Poor stroke from Vandort, he needed to apply himself in this innings. Hoping to see the trio of aesthetically pleasing batsmen make runs.

And yet baggygreen's headline is "Stuart MacGill got in amongst the wickets"; he got two wickets from moronic shots that wouldn't have landed him wickets in junior cricket.
And why should it matter if they were moronic shots? How often these days do you really see batsmen get out to good shots?

MacGill gave himself a chance yesterday of picking up wickets and did so. Not sure how bad shots (which make up the majority of wickets) can be a blemish on his figures.

Sri Lanka are in with a bigger shot than people will give them credit for.

They have 4 batsmen all capable of building up massive scores yet to be dismissed...Dead flat pitch...Bigger chance than ever to win this match. 600 probably would've been out of reach, but 500 seems gettable IMO. This match is far from over.

Haha, no. Sri Lanka won't make it to tea tomorrow. Avatar for a week?

MacGill was so poor yesterday, hope he keeps that same form so Sri Lanka score a few.

It'd be so good if Atapattu ends his test career with a ton against Australia in Australia.

Just brought up his 50. :)
