Bowling first. Good news in that is that we can't actually lose directly from a freak 9th wicket partnership now.

Useful bit of bounce there, wasn't that short.

EDIT: haha, Tharanga nowhere near the next one, though. Geez.

8th ODI in Aus for Tharanga, averages less than 10 there.
I think the most surprisingly thing about that stat is that they keep picking him here. Having seen him bat - even when he's made runs - he's never looked like he'd be of any use at all against the new ball here.

Would have liked to see doherty continue but not that bad a move really. Hauritz is still their first choice but at least now if he continues performing badly Doherty has shown he is ready and waiting to come in for Hauritz (which i hope they do if Hauritz continues being useless)

At least Johnson doesn't have to open the bowling today. To be fair though his best spell in the first ODI was his first one!

Sorta the point, I guess. He's guaranteed that should an opportunity come up, he will get another go. For now, Haureh is in front (and deserves it) but should that change, the Aussies have another option who's got form behind him. Don't think Doherty would be feeling all that down. Quite the opposite, I'd guess.
Hauritz shouldn't be in front though. He averages a very mediocre 33.35 in ODIs. It's only because of the Ashes he is playing, which assuming he will play, can only be a good thing. But I would seriously take a risk and reconsider playing Hauritz for the Ashes if other talent emerges like Doherty - something the selectors don't have the balls to do.

Not bad so far...

EDIT: Obviously those not enough pressure on these two batsmen without everyone inside the circle, though.

They started yet? FMD put the ABC stream on and some **** talking about sock-eyed salmon.

Edit: may have pressed the wrong button there.

Hauritz isn't just picked for how many wickets he takes so his average is sorta irrelevent.

Good on Doherty for having a good game but you can't just leap-frog him ahead of Hauritz on the basis of one game. Hauritz has done everything asked of him for at least 2 years in ODI's and Doherty has only hit his straps very recently. He'll need a bit more than that to get a regular spot. That's life and, as I said, I don't think he'll be disappointed at all. Ignored for ages, almost lost his state spot to Krejza and from that, has gradually fought his way back, played a ODI and did really well. If I was him, I'd be pretty ****ing happy, tbh.

For the most part his job is to keep it tight and he excelled at that last year. Constantly bowled his 10 overs under 4.5 or 4

This.

FMD, some bloke came in for Ponting last game and made a ton, you don't leave Ponting out this game.

Nathan Hauritz. The Ponting of offies.

But he's been very good for us lately in the LO stuff.

Has to be said SL have a decent record in ODis in Sydney. Can remember Jayasuriya going coco-bananas here a few times. Happy he's no longer there tbh.

Well tbh, I wouldn't even play a spinner in the first test in the Ashes. But my point was if the selectors are playing a spinner, they shouldn't let Hauritz's position in the team be set in concrete. IMO he just hasn't proved he is good enough to warrant such conservatism.

Very happy he's not there, made 3 tons I think at the SCG, one vs England too was red hot.

Bit fail, this from Tharanga. Not gonna last long like this.

Many memories of Jayasuriya going bonkers here.

Who said it's in concrete? I don't get it, right now, why does it have to be either 'he's definitely in/out'? The patterns of games he's played and missed suggest all the selectors are doing now is giving him every opportunity to play and get some form behind him.
