I think Mervyn Westfield is an eyeopener to all who think the issue is just limited to Pakistan or subc... in fact it pains me that even domestic matches are targeted.

Pakistan cricket is one big massive facepalm. There is literally no one who is free of corruption/cheating/bad attitude
some might want to remove the word "cricket" from that sentence of yours.

can xuhaib or faisal or other pakistani forum members tell me about this man? is he above corruption? is he patriotic and clean enough to step up and clear the mess created by butt and co?

If they've managed to predict 'broadly' some of the trends of the game, in advance, with communications with the ICC, what you think of The Sun is wholly irrelevant. Their reliability or otherwise doesn't come into it because the predicted stuff happening is the proof.
Like Scaly said, if there is proof that the evidence of the scoring rate was given before the match, I don't see what newspaper (and believe me, I really don't like The Sun) has to do with anything, it's wholly irelevant.

It's not like the Pakistani cricket team has much credibility left anyway....
its ridiculous that the ICC even consider this imo - the big deal about being able to predict scoring trends broadly is such a nonsensical concept i would not where to begin.

and how the sun would be able to provide compelling evidence about this?

the substance of the evidence is unknown right - where? who? what where? - yet the ICC are seemingly giving credence to it, this is moronic.

i want to know the exact trends that were predicted

then i want to know these predictions relevant to all other predictions in the market - to see if its in any way remarkable.

for example if someone predicts that between overs 18-23 there will be less that 30 runs scored, and between overs 43-47 there will be over 30 runs scored and gets it right i am struggling to see the big deal

to think a batsmen has so much control that he/they can co-ordinate scoring patterns to an exact run is mind boggling

Scaly and Phoenix are right that the evidence which the Sun has is more or less irrelevant, given that they informed the ICC about it in advance.

What we don't know is how specific the predictions were, and how accurate they turned out to be. Until we know that, we can neither condemn the players nor the ICC for taking it seriously.

I bow to no-one in my condemnation for the inepitude of the ICC, but even I would hope there was some meat on the bones of the allegations beyond "scoring quickly in the power plays, consolidating in the middle overs and accelerating towards the end" for the ICC's Chief Exec to publically announce they were worthy of an investigation.

Not to throw accusations around, but incidents like Afridi not grounding his bat when he was run out might initially look like incompetance, but could potentially take on a darker hue in light of the investigations. If, say, The Sun's report suggested that a Pakistan player was going to be run out in the 40th over it would begin to look very bad indeed.

No suggestion that Afridi is involved in any spot-fixing should be inferred from my hypothetical, I hasten to add and he did look pissed off about it too.

BoyBrumby

Plus it's precisely the kind of thing Afridi would do regardless.
Yeah, exactly. At the time I just thought "what a ****", but (supposing) a run-out was mentioned in that over in the info handed to the ICC it would look pretty bad for him.

And that's why this is such an insidious problem - you can't take anything at face value anymore. Think it is reasonable to assume that there was something specific to the allegations for the ICC to announce an investigation. That's not to prejudge the result of the investigation, but just because stuff hasn't become public in the media that doesn't mean that the authorities have automatically jumped the gun.

Discussions as to the general issues and problems affecting Pakistan as a nation should go in a different thread in OT.

Pakistan need time out of international cricket. Simple as that. They deserve to be banned and need to be banned. Quite frankly - they're corrupt and can't be trusted at all.

Zing!

TBH, is it really hard to predict Pakistan scoring patterns?

Generally a Pakistan ODI innings unfold like this;
1-5 overs; openers edged out to keeper.
6-30 overs; middle order plays test cricket, includes at least 2 run outs.
31-50 overs; brainless slogging by the ball muncher, followed by 3 more run outs.

Pakistan's bowlers spot fixing I believe, but their batsmen?
Most of these guys cant get bat to ball let alone control scoring rates.
They all are really really crap, on top of that they are playing against a very good bowling attack.

Leaning towards this. It really sucks for the likes of Haider and Ajmal, who put in 110% every game, but their board is a bunch of game killing ****s.

Things just can't and won't change without them having time out of the game. The lot of them. It's sad for the legit ones, but something simply has to be done. It's casting a negative shadow over the entire game.

Afridi does this regardless why... starts to make you really question all the games (questiionable incidents/ players before) etc...

I always remember commentated favorite line to discribe Pakistan teams. not team but TEAMS you can watch any period of cricket involving Pakistan and this is the line you will get. "You don't know which one will show up"

BBC Sport - Cricket - Jonathan Agnew on the latest cricket fixing allegations

(dunno if that's UK only or what)

They're saying it concerned the scoring pattern in two overs and that they ended up scoring that exact number or runs in those two overs.
Does make it pretty hard to stick if that's so. Even if we say there are 13 likely numbers of runs scored in an over (0-12) the odds of getting both by chance are only 169/1.

Unlikely, but hardly enough to lift the allegation beyond reasonable doubt.

Yes from a statistical point of view the odds will be nothing exceptional.

There may be other factors though, such as defensive batting, turning down runs etc. to avoid going over. Might find some more wads of cash lying about. Who knows.
