Graham Onions signs for the Dolphins -

England paceman Graham Onions has signed for the Sunfoil Dolphins and will be available for the entire South African domestic season, dependent on possible England call-ups, the KwaZulu-Natal franchise announced on Thursday.

Onions, who has taken 32 wickets in nine tests, will bolster a Dolphins attack which has looked a little thin and short of experience in recent seasons.

The 30-year-old Onions, who plays for Durham in English county cricket, was part of England’s recent Ashes-winning squad but did not play in a test. His last test was in June last year against West Indies.

“I am absolutely delighted to have signed for the Dolphins and am looking forward to play in South Africa which is renowned as having one of the strongest domestic set-ups in the world,” Onions said in a statement.

“My availability will obviously depend upon England selections, but I hope to be able to contribute to a successful campaign for the Dolphins this year,” he added.

England tour Australia from October to February next year and Onions could well expect to be part of the test squad, before they undertake a limited-overs tour of West Indies from February to March next year.

Dolphins coach Lance Klusener was naturally pleased with what Onions, who has 415 first-class wickets at an impressive average of 26.40, could add to the team.

“The signing of Graham is a great addition to the Dolphins squad. Graham is an ultimate professional and will bring quality and experience,” said Klusener.

Looking at those squads, South Africa has some decent young guys coming through.

The Lions squad are looking good, I think they'll push hard in all the competitions.

They have lots of CSA contracted players, but none of those players will be on SA duty in all formats.

Now, we just have to hope that India lets other countries come play against us, otherwise the Sunfoil Series is the best cricket we're going to see this summer.

Will be interesting to see the trio of Morris, Tsotsobe and Viljoen with the red ball together. They're already pushing young 18 year-old quick Rabada. He has been training with them and playing pre-season. Looks lively and some good away swing.

Heard Neil Mac will take more of a back-seat this season.

To be honest I have no idea. Doubt we will see current internationals leave for Kolpak. May sign deals if we have no cricket (ie Smith, Duminy, Petersen, Amla)

Suppose if Robbie P does that, then Tahir has reclaimed the test spot or Harmer has come in. Limited overs stuff, he hasn't done as well with the ball as he was doing. So maybe on the cards.

Would just imagine the old brigade like McKenzie and Prince playing Kolpak.

I think its a lot harder to get a work permit to go play County Cricket now.

I don't see many of the younger guys going now.

Will be interesting who would get the Test spinner spot.

I think they might give Tahir another go, and Harmer is probably next in line after him.

Didn't Rabada play in the eKasi challenge?

St Stiths old boy if I'm thinking of the right guy.

Yeah, that's him. Still in matric this year. Lions' new cub ready to roar - Sport LIVE

Just hope he gets looked after well conditioning wise. Gordon Parsons, the Lions bowling coach, is very excited and believes he can improve on things with him to make him even quicker.

Toyana was talking about other youngsters in the system...don't think it's just the 3 in the SA u19 squad (Valli, Dial, Rabada) but also another Saints cricketer in opener Ryan Rickleton. Thought he was hugely unlucky to miss out on the SA u19 squad even though younger at 17.

Obviously Shaylen Pillay who got a contract would be another.

I thought Abbott was going to win that award but fair play to Louw. Bowled more overs than anyone else in 4-day cricket and guiding Beuran Hendricks and Lizaad Williams well.

Bizhub highveld lions announce leadership ahead of the season

the bizhub highveld lions this morning announced the team’s leadership on the field for the coming season as their training camp at senwes park nears its end.

Previous skipper, alviro petersen will still be at the head of the team in all formats of the game. He will be assisted by stephen cook in the sunfoil series and the momentum one day cup. Jean symes steps in as vice-captain for the ram slam t20.

Chairman, archie pretorius, sees this as perfecting what worked well for the team in the previous season. “these three players added immense value to the team environment in the previous season. Both stephen and jean play an important supportive role and are able to step up when alviro is on national duty. This is crucial from a continuity perspective and ensuring that the team’s momentum is not disturbed,” pretorius said.

For petersen, this will further strengthen the foundation that the team has built. “we needed to ensure that the team is equipped with all it needs to function as a successful unit and securing the leadership is integral to that. The last thing we want is to be regarded as one hit wonders. Although we relish and enjoy the successes of last season, the real hard work comes now that the world is paying attention to a side that used to be the underdogs in any battle that we stepped into,” said petersen.

“i have full confidence in stephen and jean and know that they will provide me as a captain with the necessary support to lead this team in the season to come.”

the team returns from potchefstroom on friday and will be departing for india on tuesday, 17 september 2013. A send-off will take place in the long room at bidvest wanderers stadium on monday, 16th september at 16:00

Some news -

1) Zaheer Khan is currently in Bloemfontein training with the Knights

2) Talented left-arm swing bowler, Jan Frylinck, has left Boland and joined Griquas in provincial set-up. Eventually will be a big loss for the Cobras and a good coup for the Knights at franchise level.

3) WP amateur announced their squad for the season. A good collection of batsmen outside the Cobras squad (Matthew Kleinveldt, Pieter Malan, SA Engelbrecht, David Bedingham, Grant Edmeades etc) & seamers (Francois Plaatjies, Johan Bothma, Dane Paterson, Chad Fortune, Travis Muller & Brendan Young)
