Well, I might win the award for the worst prediction of the week. But if they allow one of these players to go for 400, it is a mistake, even if they manage to win it from there. Your focus should be on winning, not personal stats. I say again, allow the players to reach the personal milestones if they are close...but don't risk the match.
SS isn't this a bit of an exaggeration !! :D Still 7sessions left after this one (which is only half way thru')

If I were Sri Lanka, i would bat another 25 overs, and have say 15 overs bowling tonight. The thing Sri lanka dont want is to have to bat again, which obviously would mean SA would have to bat incredibly well even now, another 25 overs would mean it would be impossible for SL to bat again

The problem is, once you get to a point where you can't lose...why bat any furthur? You don't know whats going to happen. There might be a big partnership, or weather might intervene. What if they lose a day to rain, and miss out by two wickets? Why regret it later? As soon as you are sure you can't lose, stop batting. Now I understand that in this case, you may want to bat till both have triple centuries...but they should not bat a second longer.

Well, SL won't have to bat again. For SL to bat again and chase a target of more than say 100, SA would have to score 570 runs and still leave two sessions. That is NOT happening.

I hate to say you were wrong SS, but despite Sanga just getting out , there is no sign of declaration.

Which means only one thing - The Skipper is going after Lara !!:D

If he really is going for 400, he needs to be sacked as captain.

I think attitudes have changed since http://uk.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/2000-01/AUS_IN_IND/SCORECARDS/AUS_IND_T2_11-15MAR2001.html

I know the situation is different, butif SL declared now with a lead of 470 and 2 and a half days to go, IF SA batted two days going at 300 a day to make it to 600(which isnt impossible) that would leave SL a tricky 130 to win in say 50 overs..surely the objective is to make it impossible for SA to win and then make SA bat for 200 overs to save the game. Batting further on would give SL maybe a bigger chance of winning.

I do take your point though, the chances of SL not winning at this moment are minimal to the extreme

It's the second session on day 3, I don't see why they shouldn't keep batting for a while longer. If SA manage to last two days with the bat they're going to get a lot more than 470, which is the current lead.

Thats assuming they come out with the intention to score fast. Which is highly unlikely IMO. But I understand your point. A 500 lead might be worthwhile for psychological purposes. But I would have a hard time understanding the decision of they go past a lead of 550, or if they bat out the whole day. At the very least, they should leave about 50% of tea...though I would declare as soon as the lead is 500.

also think of the effect this will be having on a SA team who then will have to play another test 4 days after the end of this one. Sri Lanka playing the long game maybe!!!!

Sl should just bat out another 30-35 overs today and let SA face a few overs before close, this would leave jaya enough time to chase Lara.. If they cant get 10 wickets in 2 days, they really dont deserve to win anyway. As for the chance of rain, you cant really plan your game according to the weather. If a session or 2 gets rained out, tough luck

Well you can't control the weather, but I don't think its bad planning to think of such things when you've already got a pretty much unassailable lead.

Poor Boje gets 200 !! No respite from his skipper .

He may be destined for the record books after all , and Khan Mohammad may finally be able to Rest in Peace in his grave after his record is handed over to Nicky .

Currently 0/200 only 58 more runs needed to beat Khan Mohammad !:p

As I see it Murali should not have trouble dismissing them in 5 sessions. (but the weather is an unpredictable element ) .

Does anyone know the weather forecast for Colombo for next 2 days ? Where is Dinu when you need him :D
well it's bright and sunny today mate. not a hint of rain. so I think we're safe.
