Guptill is a bit of an enigma, he averages 33 in tests with a scoring rate of 44 yet he bats like a madman in the shorter forms. Maybe he's circumspect to his detriment in the longest form.
A lot of his scoring shots in Limited overs cricket are lofted drives. he would be chastised for playing those strokes or at least attempting one and getting out in a test.

That said - yes he is too negative in tests. He has had some innings where he has been fighting for his spot in the team and he has just blocked everything like his life depended on it. I think if he can ever settle in the NZ test team I think he would improve his scoring rate.

He is some ways away from settling in the team though - his technique is often found wanting in tests. I used to think he was bad at back foot defence. But then he fixed that. But he stills get out. He is an enigma to me in tests as well but not because of his SR just because of his average which is a lot lower than 33 if you exclude minnows.

I wonder when South Africa are going to realise that even though there was a game once about three years ago in which Parnell swung the ball at high pace, the fact that he consistently bowls poorly in both domestic and international cricket isn't a coincidence. Let him chill in domestic cricket for a while until he demonstrates that he's actually good at it.
I've always thought he had more potential as a batsman who does a bit of bowling.

I can't wait until we have Williamson, Taylor and Ryder in the same team again. So much potential there.

Rains back.

Jesse! A couple of very nice blows for six off Peterson as the rain begins to arrive. Safe to say that'll comfortably put us ahead on D/L.

We should just drop Ryder every 18 months to remind him what he supposed to be doing. Would absolutely love to see him score a hundred or two in the test series. He looked so focused when he scored that double hundred against India - want that back.

Don't think AB learning on the job helps SA's cause either. Think he has a lot to learn about captaincy. They will have to ease him into the test job soon if they want him to learn quickly and have a long productive shot at the helm.

Man milestones in cricket are crazy sometimes. A random 50 in a T20 match still changes the way a player bats after dominating.

Human beings are ********. Don't be an idiot Ryder.
