Well, apart from the West Indies, he was terrible, but it was a case of not being mature enough as a batsman to bat higher than 5-6 rather than lacking the skill set. He lost his confidence and his technique fell to pieces.
He's had a couple of years of dominating the Shield and playing up the order, even opening, on occassion, so I'd back him to make a better fist of it now.

Nice start here, handling the SA bowlers nicely and Flynn has already shown that he has a better technique than Nicol to handle this kind of bowling.
Will be very interesting to see what they do for the Tests against the WIndies. Haven't heard anyone mention Watling either and whether he's more or less guaranteed to come back in for Van Wyk. It was interesting to hear Grant Elliott's comments earlier in the day as well saying Luke Rochi was streets ahead of any other wicket-keeper batsman in the country from what he's seen of him for Wellington so far.
