Righto, get Martin out of the attack & bring Gillespie on...can't afford Martin's loosener every over with only 100 to play with, he's not getting any swing.

Surely Nicol must go for the next test. Who comes in? TMac's stint back in domestic cricket hasn't done him good, he's been averaging 14 this year. Even the best of the domestic openers (guys like Raval, Brodie, How etc.) are averaging high 30's/low 40's. Do we give one of them a chance, or bump McCullum up to open, someone up to number 3 and bring in a middle order player?

For me, the worst blunder is the NZL selectors picking Rob Nicol to open in test cricket on the back of his T20 cricket.

Just never test material.

Yup, I'm happy enough with the above considering Ryder's likely to be unavailable but would definitely bat Williamson & not Taylor at 3.

I'd also be extremely tempted to drop Vettori & play Nethula if we don't play the 4 seamers. I'm happy not to do so quite yet, but starting to wonder if we're carrying Vettori a little these days. I know he's averaged 40+ with the bat in the last few years, but watching him have absolutely no clue against a Kallis bouncer today makes me wonder if even his batting capacity is going down. And as we all know his bowling is close to zero these days, he does nothing more than bowling economically. Even his one wicket in this test was a freakish dismissal.

What happened the last time Vettori missed a Test for NZ........ :p

Has there been any other batsman in the history of cricket to get away with playing across the line more than Graeme Smith?

Edit: And as I type this, he actually misses one...

Poor finish this by NZ. 250 wouldn't have been enough but they have bowled complete garbage.
Agree, that innings really just epitomised the mis-match between these two sides. For NZ batsmen to last 30 mins, they have to fight tooth & nail (and rely on luck along the way), whereas the SA batsmen look like they're just batting in the nets.

Bazza Richards said the other day that he knows he has a poor technique and has to rely on his 'eye'.

Very disppointing for NZ with only Williamson offering them something in the second innings.

Philander is a gun and surely MOTM.

Richards wasn't impressed by Gillespie's first innings effort saying yesterday that the way he got his wickets wouldn't be a concern for SA.
