Quite - if they're going to play Wright at eight, they may as well have picked Bresnan instead. Only three front-line bowlers, and Wright may not even get a knock.
Well I'd call Flintoff a front-line bowler as well but yeah. It's not like Swann is a complete mug with the bat, nor has he done poorly in ODIs with the ball, nor has Wright done well with either discipline, nor is the team in need of another seamer ahead of a spinner. It makes no sense to me at all.

Harmison has both a better average and econ rate than the following players

I Sharma
RP Singh
S Sreesanth
JEC Franklin
MR Gillespie
MJ Mason
DJ Bravo

His record puts him in the same class as

SR Clark
Z Khan
JM Anderson

Now he isnt Joel Garner or Wasim Akram but he isnt terrible in ODIs. Far from it. I think he is one of the better ODI bowlers available for England.
Well lets not get into comparing him with others on the basis of stats, its just that if he doesn't get his radar right (which btw can be very often) he can be all over the place, he can get away with patches of wayward bowling in test cricket, but in limited over cricket it could really prove costly.

Alright just got home now, looking forward to seeing Duminy bat tonight. Heard a lot about him from a couple of Saffies I work with and want to see what he's got. Hope England rack up a good score and we get to see a decent chase tonight.

Agree with this, i think Swann should have played, but not necessarily ahead of Wright, i think Swann should have played instead of Patel, England are just not giving their newer players a fair run, Patel could have been handed over with a chance if Swann wouldn't have performed upto the mark in a few games, but giving Patel a chance ahead of Swann at this stage makes no sense.

I don't really mind the team selection if it is part of a building process and they are prepared to sacrifice this series for that. If it is the best team that the selectors think mis available in terms of getting the series won, though, then

Isn't this Philander guy supposed to be South Africa' next big all-round hope, one thing is for sure though this guy can't catch!

Patel's not really a like-for-like replacement for Swann. Swann is a bowler who bats a bit and bowls right arm spin. Patel is a batsman who bowls a bit and bowls left arm spin.

Personally I'd rather have seen Bopara go. Proven himself to be rubbish - Patel is unknown. Swann I've no problem coming in and out of the side as you'll know what you're going to get with him.

Run rate has slipped below four, only 25 off the last eight overs. They need to be conscious of all that batting to come.

Prior in particular can afford to chance his arm, he knows he's in for the series.
