TBH, I really do. I'd prefer him at seven and Flintoff eight, but Ambrose has long been a batsman I've rated highly, ever since this innings which I watched. His late development has disappointed me, and I've not seen him score any runs in between 2002 and 2007, but he still looks impressive and did not seem to have changed much in NZ in 2007/08. He's not done quite as well as I'd have hoped so far in his Test career, but he's far from the only person to start a Test career less-than-perfectly.

If I didn't think he was a number-six, I'd probably not think him a number-seven either, so yeah, I would probably hope he failed so as he was out sooner rather than later. But as I said, Ambrose is a batsman I've long held in decent regard.
Fair enough.

As I've said before, I like Ambrose and would be delighted if he could cement his place in the side as a keeper/batsman. Today really is an excellent chance for him to show what he can do. Not too keen on what I've just seen Steyn do with the new ball though, he's moving it about a foot and a half...

Were you at Hove that day or did they televise it?

No? TBH I haven't read of its fortunes since the piece in Wisden 2006 which reported on the 2005 farce (the latest in a long line of them) saying along the lines of "when the ARG is bulldozed in preparation for the 2007 World Cup, many batsmen may shed a tear, but the cheer from bowlers should be deafening".

Plans might have been changed.
It wasn't taken down. Antigua & Barbuda's football team played a World Cup qualifier there a while ago.

Shame England couldn't, really. You do wonder what's different. It's certainly not conditions, it's probably even sunnier today than it was all the time England were bowling.

Maybe just a decent-quality ball for once - that's been pretty rare this summer.

Yeah, 'twas televised. Never been to Hove myself TBH. It's quite a way from here.

Nice place to spend a day or four. In one respect not ideal for watching cricket - almost all the seating is at pitch level which isn't necessarily the best angle to watch from. But overall a good place - deckchairs, seagulls and the Championship pennant. :)

A couple of streaky strokes for Ambrose... hasn't convinced me he's test class yet. Mind you, this is one of the few times I've seen him live.

The new ball seems to have raised the pulse rate of the batsmen, going for a few shots now. Cue one of them spooning a ball to cover.

Blond fast bowler who bats left handed joins beefy all-rounder with 3 wickets left and the best part of a hundred runs required to make the opposition bat again.

1981 anyone?

Don't think some of the criticism of KP on here is particularly justified myself, he might as well have attacked, otherwise he's just delaying the inevitable. That extends to others, too.

Additionally, he didn't get out trying to hit the cover off the ball. He got out playing a poor shot, not a brainless one.

Incidentally, it surely can't take that much longer for sides to work out that Broad flicks the ball of his hips in the air almost every time he plays the shot, yet SA have yet to put a man there.
