No of course he's not Great, he's not Australian is he...

Anyway that out of the way...he's not a pretty player and you can't tell what will happen in the future but he's sure as hell started well! Probably not one of the best innings either, but he stuck at it. A totally dead pitch helped but still, 277 is a phenominal effort. Typical, when SA bowl the pitch starts to spice up...2 1/2 days too late!!!:!( :!( :!(

And you have seen him play how many times? What we all saw over here was very good young player with something about him taking full advantage of a dead pitch and rubbish bowling. But he didn't let it get to him, he just kept going and going and I can't really remember too many chances he gave...

You don't luck 277, give him the credit he deserves.

If he scores big again this series without Umpire help, he'll gain credit. If he fails (a la Kirsten vs England - 12 times in 16 knocks out before reaching 15) then the jury remains out IMO.

Its likely Marc that when a player goes on to make 250 or whatever hes going to ride some luck.

Graeme Smith has not been the only player to do that.
I recall Justin Langer went onto score 120 odd after being plumb first over to Cairns in the 1st test match at the Gabba against NZ a couple of years ago...and im sure Tendulkar & Lara have had questionable decisions go against them in the past.

Smith has now scored 2 double centuries, so that to me suggests hes got ability regardless of how much of a tosser I think he is.

Lara was caught behind first ball (I believe) against Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI of the recent series, but was given not out. He proceeded to play a brilliant century after that. WI lost the game regardless...

Tosser?
Looks like the only guy in SA team with some guts.

Boucher said he'd have turned down his country's captaincy  Smith took it on. I have no idea why SA'ans diss him like anyone else. You've got to give him credit for standing up to be counted when the team was in a low phase. I don't think he's cowed under the presssure of captaincy either.
And he seems to be a pretty good bat! He's one of my favourite international players now.

Oh, I agree!

Not only does he have guts, but hes got a whole heap of arrogance to go! Yep, sure is tasty.

Mmmm...chicken.

Lara's 501 even came after being bowled off a no-ball on 12 and dropped off a sitter on 16.

There's no way I would begrudge Lara his record - and there's certainly no way I would begrudge Smith's S.A record either over a bit of 'was-he-wasn't-he?'.

Mind you, I still think that Graeme Pollock's 274 against Australia in 1970 was better.

what a pasting the Poms are copping. Graeme Smith is a gun - he'll be one of the best of his era when he retires I reckon.

Can't stand him as a person, but as a cricketer has all the hallmarks of a champ.

304-4 suggests the wicket is very in favour of the batsmen, and doesn't suggest we're "copping a pasting"

Vaughan averaging 60.14 at home coming into this match. He now averages 64.5 in 16 Tests at home. :O Wow! 6 hundreds....

374/7, still 21 runs behind the follow on going into the final day.

I think this will be a draw, but if the 2nd day had not been rained out South Africa could have had a chance.
