Why does SA want a zillion all-rounders in the playing XI? Morne Morkel must have a permanent place in this team when fit. One among Parnell, Phehlukwayo and Morris must make way for Morne.

It seemed like Plunkett v Willey for selection.

It also seems a straight forward pick for you guys and Nasser in the comms. Think Nasser's point is well made.
I'd much sooner leave out Wood than Plunkett. I think Plunkett should be locked in as a first change bowler; Willey is straight up a new ball specialist and should be competing with Wood for that role.

South Africa's chasing woes come up again.

Always going to be a problem Duminy and Miller with their shocking 2nd innings records in their middle order

This is very true; it's a big problem for them in general. In this case though they were chasing well above par. The pitch had no demons but it was really slow and hard to score freely on against competent bowling. Not defending Duminy and Miller who are hopeless chasers but it was a tall order for a relatively poor chasing team yesterday.

morne is their best bowler

parnell sucks though does offer the left arm variety as pointed out to me in another thread, in terms of allroundering i'd prefer lucky and morris however so it's got to be parnell

Only the second time Phelukwayo has been dismissed, in his 15th ODI.

Hard to believe that innings was played by a man with a batting average of 120
not sure on this but hazlewood ruining marcus stoinis' career day may have been the first ever time he was dismissed in ODIs

It is believable that it is being played by a #9 that can hit a long ball...

300 would probably have been par. SA is so exceptionally top order heavy and we are trying to compensate by playing to many allrounders. I think our chasing has improved a bit recently largely when Miller was batting well.

I think the only sensible thing would be for Miller to bat 4, Miller, ABdV, Behardien 4,5,6. I am so tired of Duminy and I trust the hack more to play sensible shots and support the better player at the other end and he tends to finish off innings better, being doing it consistently for 3 years domestically. Its not great solution but it is all we have. This shows the loss of RR more than ever. If he was batting 5/6 SA batting line-up becomes so much stronger. I also wish they would have considered Elgar and/or Bavuma. Elgar in particular has consistently been a good LO player but type cast as a Test player only. And how they cannot play Morkel I don't know....

Miller really has laid down some markers in the last couple of years with his knocks chasing. It's time for him to come in at least at number 5 like you say or even 4. In the one series he was given that role he took it with open arms didn't he ? JP Duminy can get punted into touch and Behardien can get a go but I'm not expecting much from him. Maybe the SA 'A' series can bring Jason Smith along but right now we cannot afford an orthodox under-achieving batsman like Duminy at number 5.

That is why I said the other day, even though this team went on that unbeaten run and number 1 in the world, it is still a WIP due to the all-rounder thing. Also I thought England played Tahir how you meant to play him.

Lucky is 20, I don't think he will be a player who will have awesome average but he certainly has shown in his young career he plays clutch moments unbelievably well for someone so young with both bat and ball.

Agree his temperament seems good overall... still think that he has the potential to be another Klusener like player... but only time will tell.

It seemed crazy a few years ago but Behardien for Duminy will be an improvement. Especially for the type of role that needs to be filled. I think just Rabada, Tahir and Morris are definitely playing from our bowlers. I'd like to see Morkel in there. And I'd go Andile over Parnell.

Not really sure people should be discussing replacing JP with Behardien, I understand the logic behind such a switch, but wouldn't bet on JP been binned this summer with stolen money, its not going to happen sadly.

Also we can all agree that Morkel should play, but if JP was to miss out, would that mean the quota balance would be messed up? ABDV, Faf, QDK, Miller, Morris and Morkel? Isn't it just five white players?

Miller much more vulnerable if Behardien was to come in I think.

Morkel would come in for Morris or Parnell surely?
I think the point he's making is that if Morkel came in for Parnell they may need to play both Behardien and Duminy (and not Miller) due to the quota issues replacing Parnell with Morkel would create.

Bringing him in for Morris would avoid that, but Morris has bowled really well lately and it'd leave them with a longer tail given Parnell's never really fired with the bat internationally.

I forget Parnell has a mixed background. Seems awfully arbitrary doesn't it.

What about giving Bavuma a crack? Would at least contribute in the field.
