a perceived weakness against the short ball
I tend to take umbrage, not at you but at the prominence that this aspect of batsmanship is permeated through pundits' parlance.

I think if you were to ever have a weakness, playing short stuff would be one of the (admittedly uglier) less dangerous.

Far worse to nick to slip every innings, not move your feet and be regularly bowled or simply not having the mental side to knuckle down and bat without unnecessary risk for long periods.

Battling the short ball probably one of the less difficult things to get around with the leg side fielding rule. Steve Waugh did alright. Bevan was dudded due to this theory. Bairstow can be successful regardless.

if ginger Johhny gets a ton here this is going to be among the top 20-25 hundreds of all time given the background, might rank even higher if England wins the game.

Could well be right, probably rank as a better one than the KP one a week ago that everyone raved about.

Nah, not really IMO. A good ton, but top 25? Not unless he does something crazy like score the next 100 runs batting to the tail to get England up to 350 or something.

****'s sake. First ball with the new pill and Prior attempts a big drive at one that swung.

Bit of a look might've been judicious, eh?
