haha, was so close to posting that knock but thought some CW wag would say "Means nothing, was a OD match, "etc.

Immense knock, absolutely out of nowhere. I won't say that the fact he smashed NSW was an unexpected bonus because it was absolutely the central reason I enjoyed it just so much. Uber-hyped attack, good position (wasn't Bracken a top-5 ODI bowler at that time?), smashed to pieces by some Victorian nobody.

Given that's usually my job, makes it even funnier that I was the one to post it up.

Yeah, both he and Lee were IIRC. Clark was taking wickets for fun in the Test side and Hauritz was on the fringes of the ODI side at the time too. Just seemed so random; I remember posting on CW about it during the match. Never looked at Quiney the same way again, and in fact I think I called for him to play ODIs the following season. Funny how one knock against the team you support can leave such an impression.

wouldn't surprise me if haze played a test before cummins played another one. that's not to say haze is closer right now, but i dunno know, cummins has been ****ting me lately and if haze fires and cummins duds it up in the upcoming FC matches.....god this is a paragraph totally based on cummins being really inconsistent in t20 cricket lately. jesus christ man. (and yeah a couple of good matches sees haze leapfrog many and get to the fringes.suck it)

Who did Haze have to leapfrog really? Serious question, as didn't he get picked for ODI's on the back of not much, thus suggesting his potential?

bird, cutting, ncn off the top of my head. don't get me wrong, we all know they rated haze more than those guys, but still, due to missing plenty of games, he was behind them.

You could argue McDermott as well but I'm still not really sure where the selectors ever saw him exactly. He's probably still in their thoughts for limited overs matches.

Yeah looking over the thread plenty had McDermott and Butterworth ahead. Obviously in reality Butterworth is nowhere near the fringes while they seem to be taking it really slow with McDermott, despite putting in a couple of shield performances that Starc/Pattinson/Cummins/Haze never got near, so I don't really see it as leapfrogging.

Nah, NCN and Cutting wouldn't be ahead of him unless they took their wickets at 15. Remember, this is a guy who debuted at 18 after a handful of games - Cricket Australia will want to get him back playing international cricket asap as soon as he's fit - and the Champions Trophy was the perfect launch pad.

Inverarity insists that keepers spot still up for grabs.

Names Lyon and Holland as the two best spinners in their eyes.

Australia A game won't have a bearing on Test squad, which will be named before the Aus A game is played.
Jinxed yourself, Invers.

International Coach
Howard, the bloke you nominated Ferguson averages in the 30s too.

Cricketers shouldn't be punished for starting their domestic careers poorly. Quiney has obviously had to work very hard just to gain selection in the Victorian shield side often batting at 6 or 7 and only really had the opportunity to bat in the top order when Nick Jewell retired.

Since then, he has been the most solid opening bat in the country, being named domestic player of the year last year so I'm happy enough with the decision to name him as stand-by for a top 3 spot.
Yeah, but at least with Ferguson there is something to hang your hat on; field evidence if you will - namely, he has looked at home in international cricket (no small thing). He's really looked the part at the next level in the same way that Michael Clarke did when he came into the ODI side despite also having a modest FC average. Quiney is your quintessential journeyman, much in the mould of Ed Cowan.

On the batting front, this panel seems to like experienced players in good form, with years of FC cricket under their belt.

Disagree with Quiney being a jouneyman, tbh. More of a late bloomer. Bloke's talented as **** and always has been whereas Forrest is a relatively limited player who's sharpened his tools, so to speak.

The problem with Ferguson is that he's never really achieved anything in Shield Cricket and he was actually dropped from South Australia last year. While Quiney could very well struggle at least he's coming in off the back of two good seasons which like with Cowan's case could be a sign that he's evolved his game to the next level.

Ferguson IMO would be another Shaun Marsh selection. A guy who has achieved something at ODI level getting a look at the Test side. He's not even currently part of an ODI 11 and shouldn't be anywhere near the test side for at least 2 solid seasons(much like Quiney and Cowan).
