best thing ever was using mcgrath and bowling a slower ball as full as possible. sometimes it floated over the batsman's head and landed on off stump

Yeah, that's the worry, isn't it. If Broad and Swann can bat like this, what will proper batsmen do out there? As you say, the new ball should be absolutely vital.
