*Official* Second Test at Lord's

Yeah Root opening is such a balls-up from the English selectors. The biggest one they've made in quite some time.
I mean his technique is fine for county trundlers who can move it about three feet but couldn't hurry a sloth for pace - see off the movement, get set, cash in etc etc etc - but against bowlers with proper wheels, it's painfully obvious how that could come unstuck.

I love how ppl think Agars batting can hold his spot as a frontline spinner. His runs are a bonus unless he bats 6 with another spinner in the team. I don't care if he's 19 and its a fairytale story. Judge him the same way Lyon and the others have been.

Smith taking 3 would only be surpassed for entertainment by taking 5. As it is the commentators will bring up Smith forever now when we need a wicket. Can he pull a Bevan or a Border?
if he can spend a decent amount of time working on his bowling he could be a very good bowler, he's got a fair bit of natural talent as the Bell and Prior wickets show, the problem is atm he's generally good for at least 1 boundary ball an over but if he works hard who knows, he certainly he has potential.

and he is the peoples champion after all

Right now, we can't really afford him to lose his batting at all and gain some bowling ability, he should work hard at it, but you can't be a part-time leggie and expect to be consistent, so for me he either works hard and becomes a genuine all-rounder, or he maintains his current ability and has occasional days like this

Need his batting more right now for sure. I was more wondering if he could jag a 10 for and how awesome the commentary would be. Although he selectors then doing something stupid like picking him as the spinner would suck.

Compton was getting done. He had no idea unless it was batsman friendly.

I would have retained Compton before the Ashes and dropped Bairstow, but now they've nailed their colours to Root and Bairstow's walls they should be stuck with for a bit.

Compton was getting himself out, whereas Root simply doesn't look entirely capable at the moment.
Gee, pick your poison England, they probably shouldn't have ****ed with a winning combination and just left Root at 6.

As much as Smitteh takes wickets, he throws down pies as well, it was a gamble that paid off rather than a moment of brilliance from Clarke IMO
Yeah, but it also begs the question why he wasn't bowled last test on a slow Bunsen.

A montage of steve smith's wickets while Aretha Franklin (?) is playing is every bit as good as you think it would be

I definitely don't agree with this idea. If he's making a bigger overall contribution to the team, what does it matter whether it's through batting or bowling? He could be making an extra 30 runs per innings over Lyon, 60 more runs every test. That's going to make a big difference to your team's chances and if you just treat it as a tie-breaker you're not doing your job as a selector properly.

The general point is sound though. I think picking him was a mistake that came off and given that he's clearly not fully fit he shouldn't be playing this test either.
