He is when you factor in his batting (albeit he's massively underachieved with the bat in Test cricket), his slip fielding and what he brings to the dressing room (Ashes diaries).
I can't believe you responded despite the disclaimer.

Honestly though, I don't get why you guys think he's all that. He's been mediocre against quality batsmen since forever.

Until Swann gets Watson out in a Test match his reputation will forever be tarnished. #outbeforeswann

As soon as I saw Swann I thought he was good and would have an average around 31/32 which is nothing to sneeze at for a spinner. Strangely he then started cleaning up on a couple of tours and outperforming what I thought his potential was. I don't rate him as being particularly canny like Bedi was reputed to be, or able to control his flight like a young Vettori could, or be able to give it an almighty rip. But he is consistent and he comes at you relentlessly. His speed through the air appears to be close to perfect and he can get the odd one to bite. He has three deliveries doesn't he (different grips) which also gives him a bit of differentiation.

As far as Lyon goes - he is not wet behind the ears but he needs more seasoning.

Swann is an incredible bowler, he flights the ball beautifully and varies his speed and turn well (more by accident than design though tbf) he is one of the best spinners in the world currently.

Gotta be said I'm at a loss to understand some of the comments about Swann in the last few pages. I mean who are we measuring him against?? Of course he isn't top tier like Warne or Murali and he isn't even the best spinner in the world right now either, but FMD..........pie chucker??? **** off........he's a class act and any Aussie that doesn't believe he'd walk straight into their team has got rocks in their head. Perhaps this is why the Aussies are onto their 13th since Warne.....because they think any spin bowler that can't turn it square on glass is ****.

Swann is on course to take a crap load of wickets in this series, will he get any credit when he does??? Stupid question really, Ian Bell could score 700+ runs in the 5 tests and they'd still call him a spud.

I must admit I shocked myself when I saw that stat yesterday that only 4 spinners in history had more wickets at a lower average than Swann, never thought his record was THAT good. Obviously he isn't the 5th best spinner ever as there are many greats who only played 30 or so matches so have only 150ish wickets but they took them at low 20's. Spinning is one art that is so hard to rate over the ages though as UDRS coming in, the rules on lbw and pitches have changed so much that it is almost a different game for spinners now to what it was 50 years ago. Who can say whether Underwood was better than Swann or Verity etc... as not many people have seen all three of them. Haven't even mentioned Laker and Lock and many others. The only certainty for me is that Swann is the best English spinner since Underwood (not much opposition) and is better than many spinners from many other nations over the same period.

He is easily better than any Aussie spinner since Warne retired (not counting MacGill as he was past it by then anyway) and he would walk into their current side and be treated as a hero. Only Ajmal is better of the current spinners in the world, though the ex England players on tv and radio seem to have forgotten about Ajmal again and are claiming Swann is the best in the world when he isn't. It looks likely that Swann will pass 300 test wickets and become the leading English spin wicket taker in tests, a fair achievement for a late starter but he still won't get the respect he deserves off many.

All true, especially the problems comparing him to Underwood, Laker & Lock. Yes they had uncovered pitches and the batsmen had lighter bats, but Swann has benefited from UDRS.

imo he's the best finger spinner produced by a non-Asian country since Underwood,

Jadeja is not a joke of a bowler. He's not better than Swann, but I have very high hopes for him as a Test all-rounder. I think he could become one of the top cricketers in Test cricket.
Its his batting that I am unsure about at Test level yet more so than his bowling.
