Commentary
A stunning display by Gerard Armstrong left CW Red bewildered and defeated, as he lit up the PDV Dome with 4 sixes in a decisive cameo innings. Armstrong faced 34 balls for his 46 and helped Cloete transform a struggling situation into a magnificent 3-wicket win.
Earlier it was the cameo of Mamesh that added impetus to the game. He supported a brilliant hundred by Rob Dauth with the perfect finish to the innings, scoring 45 off just 26 balls. The two batsmen picked up a sluggish Red run rate and fashioned 94 runs from the final 9 overs of the innings.
Through the explosive batting, the Reds managed to get to a very respectable score of 258-5, and when CW Blue slumped to 138-4 in the 34th over, it seemed a Red win was the most likely result.
By the start of the final 15 overs, 104 runs were need by CW Blue for victory. Cue the fireworks, and the partnership was announced with an assault on Reddlapalli. The Blues scored 36 runs off his final 3 overs, lowering the demand to 67 runs from the final 10 overs.
The following over produced a towering six for Armstrong and a flat one for Cloete, and a total of 15 runs. Still not content to ease up, Armstrong belted Bennett over midwicket in an 11-run 42nd over. It meant that the last 5 overs had produced 62 runs to the Blue momentum.
Cloete raised his third century in 4 OD matches, then saw his partner perish in a mixup. Currie came and went in the same way, but by the time Cloete missed a slower ball from Kennett to end his vigil, scores were level. Halsey then tapped the first ball he faced into the covers, scoring the winnings single.
