Heard on the wireless that England prop, Matt Stevens has failed a drug test. Apparently he has a Coke habit...
He was on Sky Sports News looking rather ashen faced as I was channel surfing last night, but presumed it was just AN Other press conference & it didn't hold my attention. Would explain it.

Intriguing.

In other news...This world rugby club challenge to be contested in Singapore in July...4 teams:

1. Western Force
2. Perpignan
3. Gloucester
4. Saracens

All feels a bit too rugby league for me, calling it the "world club" etc when only four teams are involved....not even the champion teams either, surely it should be the crusaders (cringe) representing the southern hemisphere and not the johnny-come-latelys.

Thoughts?
First I've heard of it. Imagine it's a glorified pre-season friendly thingy.

Played in July after the Super 14 series, assuming that would be pre-season for the northern hem though....would like to see a similar tournament, though instead of random teams being invited an actual tournament...clubs nominate for it, play off in groups then all come together to play the finals in tashkent.

Indeed. Not sure about it myself. A play-off between the Super 14 & Heineiken Cup winners could work, but both hemispheres would need to treat it seriously. Always suspect the NRL teams can never quite be properly arsed in the league World Club Challenge.

Meanwhile, England call up Julian White to replace Stevens. One for the future, big Jools. Slightly unfortunate choice of phrase too, the oldest surviving member of the 2003 World Cup-winning squad. Makes it sound like Catt, Jonno et al have deceased.

Holy crap.

This lad is a real talent - if he can get back to his age-grade best, this'll be one of the NZ stories of the decade.
Wish him all the best. Must take brass balls to fight his way back from that. The fact he had a pig value rather than a plastic one fitted shows he was always intent on a comeback too. Fair play to the young fella. If I was feeling gushing I'd mention somethign about the redemptive power of sport, but suspect he's just a very impressive young man.

...So...no Danny Cipriani in Englands opening game of the Six Nations against Italy at Twickenham on Saturday....

Carter gone for 6 months. Who'll be the AB's flyhalf? As long as it's not Stephen Donald I'll be happy, but tipping Brett to get there.

I'd be highly surprised if Brett wasn't at least given an opportunity, though would also be questioning the selectors if Donald isn't first in line. Theres not a huge amount of other options really, unless Weepu or Toeava play somewhat out of position.

Why Brett, people? He couldn't even make the Canterbury starting lineup regularly towards the end of the 2008 Air NZ Cup. His defence is terrible and his kicking-from-hand still leaves a lot to be desired. Seems to me like you lot are picking on reputation rather than results.

I wouldn't use the 2008 Air New Zealand Cup as an example for Brett, he was injured for the first half of the season, came back and hardly looked comfortable (I gather he was still working his way back to full fitness), and by then Colin Slade had slotted into the mix nicely and rightly maintained his spot. I don't think Slade would be quite so impressive at Super 14 level, whereas Brett's been a successful understudy to Carter in the Super 14 for a few years. I'd admit hes got flaws but with Evans and McAlister gone, who'd you pick besides Donald as a replacement for Carter?

Weepu at 10, for mine. A much "safer" option than Donald.
Fair enough - I guess I'd just prefer to see players used in their premier position, i.e. half back for Weepu (and full back for Toeava). To be completely honest I wouldn't mind Weepu being used as a temporary option at first five, but would prefer its just that - temporary.

I don't think Weepu is the answer.

Whether it's Donald or someone else, they need the backing to start 8 Tests or whatever it's going to be, otherwise Henry will get panicky and use Leon MacDonald or someone.
