lol rest of eternity. benchmark00 with the timeless tactic of reducing to the ridiculous. fortunately no words in my mouth could possibly be as ridiculous as his own.

how long ago was it that smarsh was playing second xi cricket for the sand chokers, the recipients of australias most hopeless cricket team 2012? november. too soon matey.

That is such a uvelocity argument. Because he played 2nd XI cricket at the start of last season he shouldn't be picked for a squad that plays it's first official game in July.

since when is november the start? look we wouldn't play usman because he wouldn't work hard. so why would you introduce a bloke who has made a career of that. if we want someone with potential, lets go with the best young bat we've seen which is doolan.

if we are going to admit that we are lacking in talent we are accustomed to and want to develop and maintain a successful culture, we can't afford to hand blokes like smarsh an easy pass. otherwise lets pick him and cosgrove too and let them all do what they want.

It basically just comes down to your choice of poison. Australia's middle order depth is absolutely rubbish at the moment so no matter who gets picked, there are going to be more reasons they shouldn't be picked than reasons they should. The candidates are a mix of players who haven't done enough yet, players who have had long careers of being above average Shield bats without standing out, talented players who have underachieved, players with disciplinary problems, players with attitude problems and players with technical problems.

In an ideal world in which Australia had performing alternatives, Marsh would rightfully be nowhere near selection but in the current climate he's not a player that can be discarded, unfortunately. He's in the mix.

If they are going to consider a left-hander with discipline/fitness issues, then it should be Cosgrove

Of course he is, and you're right absolutely.

It's like the (vocal) majority of Australian supporters on this forum think we're still in 2001. If the cupboard isn't bare, it's very close.

I saw nothing in Shaun Marsh last season to suggest he'd turned the corner. We always knew he was talented and that he has some spectacular shots and an adequate technique. And he's generally been capable of producing brief periods of heavy-scoring, especially in the shorter formats.

What has generally been missing is maturity, an ability to regularly construct long-form innings without the consistent loose-shots and brain-fades that have resulted in him averaging 35 at FC level. His batting in the shield last summer and in the ODIs didn't suggest he'd suddenly developed that at 29 after a decade of professional cricket. He's going to be a very hit & miss proposition at Test level and I think we've got better batting options, both short & long-term.

Unfortunately Spermicide's form has eradicated lately leading to a string of low scores while Pesticide failed to destroy other contenders chances so I guess we have to pick Khawajacide.
