*Official* Road to 2013 Ashes

Warnie took over 100 poles IN England. Not against; in.
Warne was both a master and an ashes specialist, no evidence to suggest any of Lyon, Ahmed or Agar are going to be anything like him. Then again, England let Bruce Martin bowl poorly yet take 1/37 odd off about 20 overs, so we'll have to wait and see about that.

In terms of the spinners they've played at home Lyon is up against Bruce Martin, Tahir and Mishra. Not a lofty hurdle to clear.

In the last 5 years, the only frontline spinner to average under 30 against England in England is Saeed Ajmal, who took 12 wickets at 29.41. Hauritz averaged 32, Shakib 34.75, Harris 42.25, Tahir 47.25, Herath 49.83, Narine went wicketless in 1 Test and Mishra averaged 100+. Even if you extend it back an extra 2 years, Vettori is the only extra addition to the sub-30 average list, taking 12 wickets at 26.91. I'd say England have played the spin they've encountered at home pretty well of late. Just a bit embarrassing that Bell, Anderson and Compton chucked their wickets away against Williamson, giving him an average of 24. Other than that, England's record against spin at home in the last 5 years is very good.

play two of them imo
Definitely an increasingly likely scenario for England in at least one of the tests. The oval definitely will have to seriously considered and even Lords and Old Trafford I would guess it's gonna be considered. Especially as England are concerned about their 3rd seamer. Wouldn't even be opposed to Panesar being included in the squad today for Trent Bridge, just to give the option. It's meant to have stopped swinging at Trent Bridge and been very flat this season.

Just can't really see England doing that at home again. Monty not been on good form either this year has he?

LOL, Did you miss the Indian series??

But you're right, Indian series aside playing Swann and Monty together has never worked well for us......especially at home.

Panesar wasn't in much form and had a bad shoulder earlier in the summer but he' s played a couple of games since he was dropped/rested. Sussex play twice in the next 2 weeks in the championship so he should be getting some cricket then to judge his form and fitness. I wouldn't bother with the second spinner if Monty wasn't fit and ready. Kerrigans bowling hasn't looked that great this season, Tredwell is too similar to Swann, and Rashid would be playing as a batsman because his bowling would get smashed like Steve Smith and he's nowhere near a good enough batsman for that.

Aside from spikey rigging the Steve Smith vote and Starc being too high, what's wrong with that?

oh yeah, the actual ratios are way off, but the top 11 isn't too far from the mark. Cowan doesn't deserve to be bottom of the pile, but at the same time I'd be excluding him in favor of Smith or Khawaja.

Although going in with two pace bowlers could be a problem lol. The top 12 is alright.

the top eleven only has three frontline bowlers...

can just swap khawaja and bird without too much hassle though

Siddle can't not play. He's not just a bowler; he's a leader. Probably the player whose game is least dependent on his mood for that day.

He doesn't have to hoop it round corners or break the sound barrier, he moves it enough and he's fast enough. That, along with an excellent cricket brain and fidelity to a bowling plan gets batsmen out. Good batsmen. In other words, he's the player that gels the attack together. Not just by offering advice but leading by example.

The whole "runs in all day, big hearted" thing has turned into a pejorative, and that's a disgrace. If we had a batsman that we could describe the same way he'd have a cult following by now.
