No fan of Larsen the selector but there's nothing much one can do when your allrounder is failing in one department. Had Santner or even Anderson been available they would have been on tour while Neesham is still working his way back. None of the batsmen barring KW can bowl adequately, so either way you compromise the balance of the side by dropping CdG.

I guess it comes down to this: do you feel an attack of 4 bowlers (which may include CdG) and Williamson is enough to take 20 wickets?

Yeah CdG has proved useless batting in these conditions but if he had come off yesterday playing the way he did and he got 80 we wouldn't be having this conversation. I'd much rather him try and play the BMac way than looking weak af with plumb LBW's etc. Plus he genuinely looked the most threatening of the 3 quicks in the 2nd test, I like him as an opening bowler. Just the right amount of nibble and seam away... in all conditions it seems.

Dunno if I would make any changes for the 3rd test tbh, Sodhi has been average but he picked up a couple of wickets in Abu Dhabi in the first test so may have a bit more confidence.

going back to the nicholls thing, i'm not comparing him to latham or whoever on batting position but rather support vs output. i've been here for the whole show since im a sports nerd with no life so i remember latham cruising along with his 40s while every time nicholls appeared people were hoping for him to fail (even in his dayboo series - if i had motivation and work ethic i'd go back and dig it) so we could get rid of him and some even moaned when he scored runs because it meant he'd play more.

latham's done zilch against non-trash since dayboo. he pisses me off because he should push for a place in our all time xi. if we were going to give him a wake up call then a nice dropping before he can paper over the cracks against the club pace attacks touring this summer would be the time before he can score some tons then promptly melt in australia.

i want the bastard to prove me wrong next test. i want him to do a mitch m and score a double then sign up to cw to call me a **** with no life and no hope who will never amount to anything so i can eat his penis.

blundell for colin to lengthen the batting is a sensible option but the team that played the first two tests is the best balance and the best personnel in the squad for that balance imo. the only better balance would be a fit santner who would have allowed us to play the 3 best quicks and two spinners for the whole series.

i'll report any posts suggesting somerville can be an allrounder for posting offensive and blatantly false material. you might as well admit you're a nazi if you're going to advocate it. you deserve the most annoying university students outside your window possible.

I agree there would still be difficult selection questions here even if the squad had some better options in it.

With a spare batsman in the squad though, we could revert from the 5 bat, 1 allrounder, 1 wk, 4 bowlers composition to the more standard 6 bat, 1 wk, 4 bowler option. We still can but we have to believe that Blundell is a good enough batsman to score runs here (in only his third test, having never played away).

No S.O.S. will be sent out. That would be Larsen admitting he was wrong. We will go with the same XI, maybe one change, in the third test. Larsen will rate us giant underdogs, plucky kiwis in the 1990s post-Hadlee. He's got a loser mentality because he comes from a losing era.

The next test doesn't start till Monday next week. Send an SOS to NZ, haul Will Young over there on the first plane from Auckland to Dubai, and give him a debut batting at 6. Two spinners (Sommerville for Sodhi), and two seamers - Boult and Wagner is my first choice but it's not easy because we need quicks who can make the first 20 overs of the new ball count. Given Wagner got bowled into the ground at Dubai I'm almost thinking it's worthwhile giving Southee a go.
