Indeed the wicket taking ball (this is an over simplification) comes through about knee height when the batsman presses forward because it has time to spin before impact. If you can hit in on the half volley then sure get forward. If not then ideally you need to chip down the pitch and drive it for a single or like you say actually go back.

Another advantage of going back is that it encourages the bowler to over pitch and then if you know how to skip down the wicket you are in business.
Against club level spinners (at least at my level) there's little need to go down the track as most spinners drag it short at least once an over. Playing back is definitely the safe way to go assuming you read the length alright.

Not Terrible
For us to win, McCullum has to get a double or we need three centurions. If we bat till the end of day 5 we win*

*the only way we draw and don't win is if Watling does something crazy and saves it by himself.

Yeah, going back to a length ball is safer than forward as long as the ball isn't turning too quickly, but as you say, you can't camp, gotta be reading the length well and on the look out for the slider

i hope we block it out, tick along until we're within range of the target, block some more then tim southee hits a six off the last ball with only a dozen or so runs required to win the game.

Blocky

Who would you pick as the NZ spinner, Blocky?
If forced to pick one, NcCullum - solely because of what he might add in the field and the fact that he can dart up an end.

At the moment, we're about three to five years away from knowing if Santner or Walker will develop, but basically we don't have a spinner worth selecting at test.

Hang on a second here. I know the topic has moved on a bit but, other than Blocky, who's actually heard anything that points to Sodhi being arrogant and rating himself too highly?

Everything I've had to do with the guy (which isn't heaps) showed him to be a thoroughly nice guy who works really hard at his craft. If anything, he seemed a tad embarrassed that he'd made the team so quickly and looked overly eager to prove himself.
Guess you didn't hear the part where he was telling people he'd have more wickets than Vettori by the time he was thirty then, nor the part where he told James Pamment that he wouldn't work with him or Cliff Dickinson on spin bowling since he was an NZ player now, or the part where he gave various players send offs after being smashed all around the park by them, etc.

The problem with people making statements like that is that I actually do know the person I'm talking about. You don't.
