As far as I know there's not a lot of politics involved in Test or ODI selection anymore - it used to be a big problem and it still happens a fair bit at lower levels but the international team has been picked essentially on merit for a while now. The selectors are often a bit clueless, but I don't think it's politics causing that as much as basic, typical selection errors. The difference in their first class records is huge, I'd have thought they'd be reasonably easy to compare too since it sounds as though they're both medium pace and both played for the Tuskers (Mpofu interestingly batted at 9 for them in the match Meth took 13 wickets in). Seems a complete no-brainer really.
Does Zimbabwe have a lot of politics or racial quotas in their team selections?
Meth is considered by many to be too slow to make the step up. Yes, Mpofu is medium pace as well, but Meth is even slower so there's a theory he'd be exposed at this level. Mpofu is also a lot more experienced internationally and Meth has looked pretty damn poor in ODIs, although one day cricket has never really been his thing. I don't really agree with the rationale at all - to me picking a bloke that bowls 125km/hr based on extra pace is ridiculous as if you're going to bowl that slow or slower it's not going to be an asset to you either way - but that's why Mpofu was preferred originally.
It's all a tad irrelevant as Meth is injured at the moment and won't be back for a little while yet, but it still grates me a bit that he didn't play the Bangladesh Test.
