Southee gets three while bowling absolute mud, further prolonging this guy being in the NZ side in the **** form he's in.
Henry is not as good as Southee but right now I am fairly confident he would have bowled better.

You can hear a bit of frustration from Bond in commentary.

I heart you Athlai and Kippax and I don't want to put the mockers on him but this Raval Is A Myth thing is looking a bit weird. Sure he scores more on the on-side but there's nothing glaringly bad about his technique.

While Ian Smith has been determinedly jinxing Raval, I'm just pleased we have someone who leaves properly and plays late, unlike Guptill.

One thing I'd say is he's overhitting those leg glances - too much backswing and then coming down fast and late with an angled bat, so a risk of bowled/ lbw. Should just be an extension of a block with a slightly angled bat.

... and there goes Latham - not sure why he hasn't been ducking those today.

Yeah I've noticed this too but OTOH it is nice that he's able to put the bowlers off that straight line.

Latham has officially not improved at all since his debut. This is just not good enough. Our players are not getting better within the national set up. Nothing shows that more clearly than that when you best bowler and best batsmen are two near-journeymen debutants.

He looks pretty good to me. Difficult batting conditions, too.

At the end of the day all he needs to do to deserve his place in the team is to be better than Guptill. He's looked better in this game.

Tbh scoring more on the on side is a good thing for a left handed opener. Leave outside off, nurdle off the pads, slap short ****. All you need.

Nice stats piece in the SST today on Latham:

His five centuries put him behind John Wright (12) and Glenn Turner (7). He's ahead of fellow lefties, Richardson and Bert Sutcliffe for centuries scored as an opener (Sutcliffe scored four of his five centuries as an opener).

Only eight players have scored more runs opening the batting for New Zealand in tests. By the time this summer is over he should be fourth on that list behind Wright, Turner and Richardson - prior to the Pakistan series he needed 459 runs to overtake Graham Dowling in fourth place.

From there he will be just one good season short of overtaking Richardson (2770) and Turner (2828).

Since his test debut Latham has scored 1748 tests runs (prior to first test against Pakistan), only Kane Williamson (2618) has scored more in the same period.
Digging the data: Tom Latham is already one of NZ's best ever openers | Stuff.co.nz

This sounds weird in my own head, but I think the pitch has played into Jeet's hands in this game. He's very susceptible outside off stump, people who know his game and bowl to him know you go away, away away in the channel and play the patience game. He's got out that way 4 or so times already this summer, 3 at domestic and in the first innings in this game. Trouble is, Pakistan haven't had the runs on the board nor the patience, possibly neither the knowledge of his game to execute that. That'll be where teams will target him when they have more vision of him at that level. You don't have to get straight at all. Sort of like Hamish Rutherford but Jeet doesn't have the cover drive, he just waits until you get a bit short or straight.

Yeah I'm not about to harp on about it after he's played well in difficult conditions but Pakistan haven't looked super prepared for him.

Nup, and I guess you can't necessarily blame them. You'd expect them to be better prepared for the next Test.

Interesting puff piece on Tom Latham in one of the papers this morning, saying hes already better than Richardson and Sutcliff, at least stats wise. I dunno why but I can't remember a player who's exasperated me more, not McCullum/McMillan or anyone. I don't think he deserves near the praise he gets, not yet anyway.

Facts are, 2 of his five Test centuries are against Zimbabwe. Averaging 36 is nowhere near good enough for a guy of his ability, as I keep pissing on about. He averages an absolutely woeful 26 at home, and his average year on year has declined since his debut. He's undroppable because there's noone near his talent. But gee it's frustrating as hell, he's nigh on played 50 Test match innings now and it's not good enough.
