*Official* Pakistan in England 2020

Great to have you back CWB. It has been a while since I last saw you post.

Post more often.
Thanks old friend. Life has got in the way and prevented me from posting on or even visiting CW in recent years. But the last few England Tests have rekindled my love of the game. I’m positively wallowing in the Broad resurgence and the maturation of Stokes. The only thing lacking is a return to form and triumphant recall for Moeen, but for that I suspect I’ll be waiting a while ☹.

My enjoyment of the 1st Test was tempered by anger, regret and bittersweet reflections. Imagine a fully fit and firing Mohammad Amir at the disposal of Pakistan on that final day? One who had not, as a teenager, been manipulated by dressing room ‘elder statesmen’ into spot-fixing.

And consequently an Amir who — rather than being transmogrified by years of enforced inactivity from a devastating rapier with real pace and late movement both ways into a military medium trundler — would have gradually morphed on the greatest cricketing stages from larva to chrysalis before fulfilling his destiny and emerging butterfly-like as the true heir to the legendary Wasim.

England would have been lucky to get to 150.

amir wasn't that quick as a '17 year old'. i remember his debut few series well and he was more in the trent boult than the mitchell starc pace bracket.

but he didn't need to be fast or 17 to be a hugely promising talent for world cricket. just a shame he and asif made such poor decisions.

Pakistan will probably go in unchanged

England

Sibley
Burns
Crawley
Root
Pope
Buttler
Woakes

I think the above is a given, but here's where it gets hard to predict

Curran
Bess
Broad
Archer/Anderson

I suspect Anderson or Archer may be rested.
Agree with England’s top 7, that’s a given. As you say the next four places are a little more difficult to predict, I can’t see Jimmy playing in this one (though the radio has just suggested otherwise) even if he bowled well at OT. He’s had a fair bit of cricket in a short space time I’d give him a break and ensure he’s fresh for the potential deciding third Test.

Broad has to play providing he’s still fit and fresh, Bess probably hasn’t done anything to warrant losing his place. You can make a very good case for Leach, probably the better spinner and a number of right-handers to go at in the Pakistan batting, if there is depth in the batting then maybe Bess’s batting becomes less important. Although Leach hasn’t bowled competitively for a while and not in a first-class game since November 2019.

Personally I agree with the previous comment from honestbharani and I’d controversially have Wood over Archer.

Not Curran’s biggest fan where his bowling is concerned, but he probably edges out anyone else, though I’d love to see Robinson make his debut.

Weather has been really weird this week horribly hot (yes I know just for us Northern Hemisphere wimps), keep on threatening thunderstorms, but so far in Exeter not a drop, but apparently small thunderstorms all over the shop in surrounds, similar in Southanpton I think, so who the **** knows what the weather will be like.

In the end, when they decided Bess and Buttler would play the first Test, that was basically it for the series. foakes and Leach are getting no cricket, so almost unfair to throw them in now, even if theyd have been my first choice at the start, die is cast. bit different for worload with pacers, so understand rotation, I would go Curran for Archer here, but not strongly.

Definitely, especially regarding Foakes. Perhaps Leach is different insofar as he can afford to be a bit rusty at first, before finding his rhythm, but I'd be surprised if he plays.

I remember prophesying that him hanging out with Asif would end in tears

Neither Foakes nor Leach are in the 14 man squad.

Am I right that England haven't called up anyone up to cover for the sad absences of Stokes and Lawrence? I don't think there's a spare batsman left in the secure bubble and we're already picking five bowlers. Best hope none of the top 5 pick up an injury in the morning as the batting line up would be too wretched to contemplate.

Actually, it's pretty funny to do so. What could they do? Add a sixth bowler and move everyone up even further so Buttler keeping and batting 5, Woakes 6, SCurran 7? Or call Foakes in from outside the match day squad and play him as a specialist bat at 5? (They have at least scrapped the football warm up now right?)

I’m not sure if they have standby players outside the named 14. They did for the previous Tests, in the last one it was Bracey, Lawrence, Foakes and Leach. I haven’t seen anyone report it, but possibly Bracey and Foakes are still in the bubble as standby should a batsman go down at the 11th hour.
