Bloody hell, weird watching Mark Taylor diving in front of first slip to take the catch. Usually it was Mark Waugh doing that to him.

No SOK would be more surprising than +SOK to me.

The problem is who to 'rest'. I wouldn't mind giving Starceh a spell. He's looked like he could do with a week off here, but it probably won't happen. With India next up Lyon will be given another chance.

I'd actually like to see Maddo and Wade go, bring in Hilton and SOK and drop Handcomb to 6 with the gloves. SOK @ 7 is likely to score at least as many as our 7s have since the last home Ashes.

I wonder if they're seriously considering this. Only issue is that it could affect his batting, which has been stellar.

TJB has converted me tbh, I'd just pick Maxwell.
imagine how good it would be to have Maxwell + SOK replace Lyon + Wade

Jesus, Handscomb the gloves? I've had to spend the last three years arguing against him doing it for Victoria, now I have to do it in Australian selection threads?

I think Starc has to play - assuming this is a draw, the Australian team has to win this series 2-0 to try and get as much "goodwill" and credits in the bank before the knives come out after a big loss in India. Now, if all the "vitals" with the strength/conditioning squad say rest him, then fair enough.

I hear ya,

but when the alternative is Wade?
You just don't want to **** up a promising young batsman that looks that good by making him keep

Maybe he'd handle it fine but who knows, maybe vicorthodox has inside information that it wouldn't be the best for him

See what you mean, but I think in his current condition I'm not convinced he'd be better than any of Hazlewood, Bird or Sayers. He doesn't look right, and I think there's a big risk of him breaking down.

Looks like we may get some play today after all. Depends on how long it takes to drain the field though.

Handscomb keeping would be a huge mistake. Not sure who is better though.
Whiteman hasn't done much lately, Dunk doesn't seem to keep anymore and he's in **** forma anyway, Doran is a joke, Pierson is just as bad, Paine doesn't even play FC cricket

Is Hartley still playing?

am I missing anyone?

looks bleak, has to be Nevill or Wade

Nah, no inside information. Pete put his hand up to keep because it was his best chance of playing for Victoria when Wade was being picked as the Australian keeper the first time around - he'd stopped keeping for about three or four years before that.

Look through this conversation - Morris played with St Kilda and used to keep instead of Handscomb occasionally in the 1st XI (usually only played 2nd XI), while "SB Tang" is a journo who has had a few sit down chats with him, from what I can tell.

I'd just bring back Nevill for now. We will need good glove work in India. Hopefully Whiteman or someone else can put forward a case in the coming seasons. Based on our recent output from 6 Maxwell or Forkers couldn't be worse and the latter adds bowling.

Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith
good batsman (not Maddinson)
Handscomb (wk)
Maxwell
Faulkner
SOK
Starc
Hazlwood

how good does this look. Conversely you could have a specialist keeper instead of "good batsman" and let Handscomb play as a bat. Bring Bird or someone (Pattinson if fit) in for Forkers if his bowling isn't cutting it.

I think the point is that despite the improvement since Hobart we haven't got the right combo on the field yet.

The young bloke still needs to come on a bit more, but the top 5 is about as good as we can ask for atm and the pace attack is fine with guys like Patto and Cummins etc coming back for added depth.

But...

Wade if anything has been a step back from Nev with the bat and certainly a step back with the gloves.
Maddinson should never have been picked and has done nothing to disprove that.
Lyon really is struggling unless you serve him up some lefties.

It's all well and good to pick and stick, and you would expect that the selectors will do so with Renshaw (as they should).

But sticking with bad calls just multiplies the error. At least two should be gone by Sydney regardless of the result and Lyon really can only survive as an indicator for playing two spinners in India.
