Monty is really making a good case for himself. Nice to see him doing better than Swann.

Really happy with Fawad, Yasir and Talha. Hope PCB arranges more tours for this team because some of the players got good starts like Salahuddin.

Sarfraz and Khalil were the biggest disappointments.

Still yet to decide whether or not I rate him, but I'd be chuffed to bits for him if he got a Test.
I rate him for what he is - a solid enough spinner who now has over 500 FC wickets at an average of around 30, of which 120 odd of those wickets are a Test level at a cost of around 34. I think he makes for an extremely good bench option that most other Test sides would kill for, and I'm delighted with his performance in this game because he's showing that he's performing at a level that indicates he'll do a job if he gets selected and he's putting enough pressure on Swann to keep him honest.

He's the ideal 12th man for a squad like England's.

Isn't a 12th man supposed to field? But I take your point. What I've never been able to call is whether he'll improve.

Anyway, pavilion opinions has been writing again about the injustice of having world cricket so firmly entrenched in a place with the human rights record of the UAE. Well worth a look.

Why isn't this issue getting more attention? Is it just too difficult to bring up?

I think the problem is that Dubai and the UAE is perceived as fairly liberal and Westernised by Islamic standards. Certainly I was toying with the idea of saving up some money this year so we could maybe spend a week in Dubai this time next year to enjoy a bit of winter sunshine.

It actually took Flem to post this article over at CricSim for me to get how bad the UAE still is, which is something I wouldn't have appreciated had I not read the article in question.

The UAE has an atrocious human rights record. We discussed this issue in OT a while ago. The glamorous buildings and shopping malls are built on the backs of modern day slaves. It is outrageous that more attention is not paid to this issue. I lived in Abu Dhabi as a child and always had fond memories of the place. Now that I know more about how they treat human beings there, I will never ever visit that country as a tourist and spend even a penny to help fill up the coffers of those ****s.

Showed the same article to my uncle who stays there before we left for the UAE last December. He said it's exaggeration and labourers are treated pretty decently, especially by the standards of living that they initially come from. Didn't want to be rude to him and ask him how he would know about the issue (works in the automobile industry) so I just let it be. To me it shows that some people living there aren't willing to accept/have quietly accepted these facts and prefer not to think about them too much, while others are simply oblivious.

From what I have been able to gather so far, most laborers are treated decently.

Also having met some guys who work here as laborers pointed out that some times conditions were harsh but >> what they had back home hence they stick.

I don't claim to know a lot about the issue, just giving my opinion. But there have been quite a few sources that portray the poor treatment of labourers as modern slaves, surely all of them can't be baseless?

tbf I only stated about the laborers that I had met and their experience was not as bad as some of the reports claim. It is not exactly that I meet the laborers here everyday and in all states of the UAE so I can't claim to have a representative sample.

My experience has been somewhat like your uncle's

Yeah, my bad.

Feel a bit hypocritical now because I did thoroughly enjoy myself in Dubai and Abu Dhabi...

State tyranny [in Zimbabwe] v Capital tyranny (A bit different, world trusts corporations a bit more in these situations)

I normally don't read Johan Hari because I have never liked him, but I remember reading that very article that Furball linked when it was written and have to agree with Hari, the UAE has a very dirty secret. Pakistani, Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi citizens treated as slaves by the Emiratis.

umm if human rights is a criteria, then we are going to have stop playing cricket in most nations.
