Australia took 56 out of the 100 wickets available in the Ashes.
It's still a typically ill thought out comment, as both India and Australia took 20 wickets once. India were dangerous that one afternoon at TB where they found a good length and swung it on a seamers' wicket, and Australia were dangerous when Johnson found that one annual spell of his.

Being a poor bowling side and "being able to take 20 wickets" are very different things if you ask me. The only side we've one up against lately that genuinely couldn't take 20 wickets was Sri Lanka.

Pleased Graham Onions is the man to provide additional cover to fellow quicks Tremlett, Broad and Bresnan for the trip to the UAE. While he's not an official squad member, he is going to the UAE in case any of these break down. Let's him know he's still considered to be in with a sniff of playing Test cricket again.

Just like Ajmal Shahzad in the Ashes last year?

Well yes, Shahzad got himself into the fringes of the side but failed to show any consistency throughout the domestic season and so has rightly dropped out of favour while he continues to work on his game and tries to develop his skills. Onions' performances have rarely been an issue, just fitness problems, and proved this season he was back to somewhere near his best. When Onions is at his best, he is one of the finest bowlers on the domestic circuit, without doubt imo.

I think it's good from a continuity point of view too. Onions didn't do anything wrong when he got a go and, by all accounts, has worked very hard to get himself back to fitness after a potentially career-threatening injury.

Lot of time for the boy, actually; has a good head on his shoulders and is a thinker about the sport, as his impressive spells in the Sky studios have shown.

Absolutely. He is far more developed bowler than a Shahzad at this stage, and his performances while playing for England have warranted his stand-by selection for the UAE. Had he had a poor domestic season, it may have made things more difficult for the England selectors, but 50 wickets at under 27 meant he was always likely to be in contention.

Yeah I think Onions is the right choice. He was fairly impressive in his brief time in the side, and is the sort of bowler who would fit into the current side.

Not to mention that forward defence in Centurion and Cape Town. Would we even be number one without those knocks?

Yes he's exactly the right type of bowler that fits in with the teams plans, wicket to wicket, good control and rarely gets hit all over the shop, as well as can bowl to a plan. Good choice for out in UAE, he can keep the pressure on for over after over and like I said doesn't give too many 4 balls in a spell.

Why has he got an economy of 3.64 in Tests and 3.61 in first class. Last season 3.72.

He bowls a very attacking line and length. I don't think he's an inaccurate bowler but he bowls full at the stumps so the ball isn't moving and/or the batsmen play him well he will go for runs at times. it doesn't mean he's bowling poorly though; he's just the sort of bowler who could advance the game in both directions.

What's the difference?

Yes agree with PEWS on this, he bowls a full length which inevitably leads to him being driven on occasions and at times can be expensive, but if there is anything in the wicket he will find it and expose the batsmen. His control of line is generally outstanding.

Yes he won't be out in the UAE for the duration of the tour, think they've said all being well with the potentially injured players Onions will be coming home either during or right after the first Test.

Pavilion Opinions brings up a rather uncomfortable fact today, that the backdrop of human rights abuses in the UAE is really not to be forgotten about. The wikipedia page on the subject does not make happy reading:

***ual relations outside of a traditional, heterosexual marriage are a crime and punishments range from jail time, fines, deportation, and the death penalty. A person may also face forced hormone treatments which may include chemical castration.
When you consider that the powers that be have acted on human rights abuses before - in Zimbabwe and South Africa in particular - the fact that the UAE plays host to three separate nations' cricket teams and the ICC headquarters themselves leaves something to be desired, doesn't it?

That's also quite worrying considering England have a gay squad member going over there.
