I think he can warrant a #6 position with an average of 40. I'd rather a player average 40 but continually play "second fiddle" than a player who averages 30 and does it on his own.
fair enough, but my point is that this was the acid test with no Cairns in the middle order, and Oram put his hand up with the bat and then produced the goods..........a new level of maturity in his batting IMO, but I'd like to reserve judgement as #6 until I see how he follows it up not just against AUS but also following that v SRL when the pressure is off somewhat...........

I wouldn't want him to be entrusted with a full 10.
I heard about a year ago that he was working with John Bracewell in turning himself in to a off spinner. That would be very very handy and he would play a similar role to Symands where he could bowl either mediums or spin or even similar to a Lehmann bowling through the middle overs.. has anyone else heard about Styris and his spin bowling? He probably gave up on the idea..

i would - he's probaly our most reliable bowler(in terms of getting through a tidy 10 overs)

yeah there was a big write up on that in the local waikato paper a while ago but i think if he was going to do it he would of done it by now, half the balls he bowls are off-spinners anyway lol

hopefully martin crowe doesn't read this article!
"My form's been patchy for Northern since I came home but quite honestly we've played on three crap wickets in the one-dayers"

You just wonder sometimes with Styris that he thinks everything will come easy to him. Sure, he struggled on crap wickets..but then he also struggled on good wickets so he's only got himself to blame at the moment.

Some of these comments make him sound extremely arrogant - and bear in mind they are direct quotes so can't be changed:

"I've played a few games now (95), so I don't think I need a wake-up call," he said
Your form and attitude at the crease suggests otherwise.

"I'd been looking forward to these games as preparation for Australia but so far they have been a waste of time for me," Styris said.
Well, we're terribly sorry about that. Would Sir like a state highway installed as the pitch?

"I'd be disappointed if that was the reason," Styris said in his typically blunt manner.
"I was man of the series three games ago in Bangladesh, so I'm not going that bad.
Ahhh, that makes everything OK. You were man of the series against Bangladesh - once again furthering your reputation as a flat-track, crap-attack bully.

I must say I was surprised in reading that article ....I was always under the impression Styris was quite modest. After reading that, Obviously not

well oram has been diagnosed with a bone injury in his back and is going to undergo some more scans.

ORAM DIAGNOSED WITH BONE INJURY
New Zealand cricket allrounder Jacob Oram has been sidelined for the immediate future after a scan revealed a bone injury in his back.
Oram had the bone scan in Hamilton yesterday, having been sidelined since January 9 with continued back pain, feared to be a stress fracture.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said in a statement today further tests would be needed for a clearer diagnosis.
``The extent of the injury is yet to be determined but will become clearer in a few days after he has a CT scan,'' the statement said.
Team management wouldn't comment about his playing future until the results of the CT scan were known.
If it is a stress fracture, Oram will almost certainly miss the tour by Australia in February and March, and two tests against Sri Lanka in April.
Oram returned home to Palmerston North today.

Styris' ODI bowling statistics in 2004:

25m, 23w @ 24.22, bb3-16, eco 4.30

I would say those are pretty impressive figures. His accuracy in his bowling has improved, and I would feel pretty safe having Styris bowl 10 overs.

Yeah. And my view of Andre Adams was proven wrong in the Herald today too, he said some really nice stuff about Jeff Wilson's selection.

69/5!

They bat way down though, Warne at 11, so they could still get somewhere near a decent score.

Can Jonty save the day and get them through to a respectable score? He's done it plenty of times for SA. Otherwise this one's shaping as a fizzer.
