Glad New Zealand were able to beat the rain. Other than the DdS knock they dominated the Test.

**** two Test series though. A third Test would've been great here.
Absolutely. Does anyone but the bean counters give a toss about a handful of T20s?

Oh, and - take that, rain! :D

Spinners can play longer than seamers. Look at fatty Herath. We can expect Ajaz and Somers to be playing at least another 4 years, another 8-9 for Patel alone maybe

Will depend on what Sommerville wants out of life and how much time he wants to spend with his family, but yeah given he spent his 20's living a normal 9-5 life and playing grade cricket on the weekends it's not unreasonable to assume he'll want to hang around and live his dream for a few more years. Again, I reckon he's the better of the two for NZ conditions. Offers more with the bat too and should get his home debut against England in November.

Astle's had an unfortunate last couple of seasons with random injuries and don't think he's had the bowling to ever be in great rhythm in that time, or at least not when he might've played for NZ. Might've been nice to pick him 2-3 years ago when he'd had a couple seasons in a row near top of the domestic wicket charts. I'm still always fascinated to see how he goes, but it's understandable he's behind the finger spinning pair now.

Santner's simply outcompeted for spots in the test side right now - Ajaz a much better left arm orthodox in Asia, Somerville a better spinner in SENA countries and can contribute a little with the bat, De Grandhomme a better batting allrounder. When I think ahead to the Australia tour, a tidy left arm spinner might in theory be useful if he could bat well, but just can't see Santner making runs against bowling that is quick at the body, or quick round the wicket at the pegs, so there's no point. Somerville the only spinner to make that squad imo, while Santner hopefully has a good summer in FC cricket at home.

Sodhi will be back, but again is justifiably low down the pecking order (below Tastle) right now.

Can be sure every future opposition will have a cake lined up for Kane Williamson - finally found his weakness.

Wonder what might work for Steve Smith later in the season - a fidget spinner perhaps.

I can understand why Akila was rested for this one, but still would've played him if I were SL. He would've had Colin on toast with his infinity bluff wong'un.

That was amazing stuff by the lads, great win. One of the very best given how most contributed and our two of the best batters scored not much either. Shows the depth in the team. Everyone was slagging off Southee and he comes out picks up lots of wickets. BJ Watling what a champion, the best series he's ever had... Tom Latham was outstanding, his knock in this test match was of very high quality. I had my reservations about CDG but again he's proved he can score some runs quickly if the platform is set. Can't expect him to save a test match but he will do some damage if we are 300/5 or something like that. As for spin bowling goes, I think Ajaz and Sommerville pair was comparable to dare may I say the sub continent spinning pairs like. They exceeded my expectations of them.

This is why you would rate this team, they are definitely good enough to win any where in the world in any format. We are likely going through the best phase in the NZ cricket history. We have the backup players for everyone in the team (of course barring the super stars Rosco, Kane and Boult). National side has never been more healthier. Need to hang on to the likes of Rosco for some years, his experience will be crucial for this team.

I believe we have backup for wicket keeping, spin bowling and batting in all formats. There must be something that the administration/coaching staff at a level below doing right. Never did we have so many options available and no one is a spud. They are all good in their own way.

We have to guard a bit against complacency and not get struck with the same team. If the same guys are turning up match after match after match they are bound to fall over at some point in time.

I'd like Black Caps to be a bit more adventurous and build our bench strength by giving them a decent go. The T20 series could have been a great series to give some bench strength a go but these days most would rather play T20s so that they can attract T20 leagues attention. If not in T20 at least bring in some players in the one day series' which there are not many that are coming up I presume.

Despite all this, Sri Lanka had the potential but they are not battle hardened like some of the other teams like Aussies, India and England. I think we are playing India, England and Aussies this season. Despite having done really well I still feel few careers will be on line by the time the season is finished. Great opportunity for our first class players to put their hand up by putting some good runs and wickets on board.

He played a big part in saving the following test match for us (even if his attacking instincts let him down in the end): https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...gland-2nd-test-eng-tour-of-aus-and-nz-2017-18

Also don't think this team has the potential to win tests in India, but that's no great slight as nobody does right now (besides India of course).

Not much to feel good about, although pretty funny how mr mister has sunk 60 bucks into betting on the draw

I read a lot on here about how the rain was killing NZ and I largely agreed, but in hindsight it messed up SL more IMO, there was no path to victory open after day 3 due to the rain, but NZ had clear objectives, definitely would have influenced the mindset of the SL players and leadership and they never play well under that circumstance, dreadful performance on day 5 though jesus, nice to see Dickwella play a very old fashioned test knock though, he didn't look like much with the bat when he first toured NZ in 2014 so he's come a long way

Another noteworthy thing about the win: verrry hard for a visiting team especially a southern hemisphere team to win by an innings in the subcontinent. NZ did manage it at Sharjah 2014 (the 'Phillip Hughes' test), but this one is definitely more of a win to be savoured. The lads have shpwn they're up for good, hard fought test cricket and I couldn't be happier.

Tough season ahead, but now for a well deserved break.

I cashed out that second bet during day 4. Got around 75% of my max return, so can't complain

Still think Ajaz should be first choice spinner for Aus tour at the end of the year. Steve Smith's only weakness (!) is left arm orthodox. Just play Ajaz at 11 with Southee, Wags, Boult, CdG and maybe Ferguson in the squad too.

Not sure if I agree - Somerville's experience bowling in Australia could be a major asset.
