Tough to want to write off someone at 30 but Southee, I'd be prepared to. He just has no zip anymore. He's a million miles off someone like Siddle, who still hits the deck and gets movement that troubles good players, and in the right conditions is potential dynamite.

It's Matt Henry's spot if he wants to be good enough, which he certainly hinted at during the World Cup. But equally, I'd like Kyle Jamieson to push for that spot too. Lockie I feel like is better left as a limited overs player for now.
if you're worried about southee's decline into the 125-130 range, jamieson probably isn't your man.

Was it alarming? He’s been like that for two or three years at least
Not really, go back and look at his bowling in the 2018 England test series. Consistently in the mid-130's - not his best but still useful. It's really only since last summer that his pace has really started to head into genuine military medium territory.

25 tests and counting in SL where the test has ended in a win/loss result. This is the 2nd longest streak in terms of win/loss streak in a country. 3rd longest was England currently which ended with the drawn Lords test - 20 tests. Next is SA currently standing at 19 tests and counting. Longest streak is Australia 80 tests starting from their inaugural test in 1877.

I'm not worried about his raw speed numbers. It's just his inability to work into the deck or provide any level of zip at whatever pace he's operating at. McGrath was a classic example of a guy who bowled 130 but had zip. Siddle is doing it now too. And Jamieson is obviously very different in terms of being 6'10 or whatever he is.

Yeah, I think that’s what I was thinking, watching his bowling. It was very Gavin Larseny.

Tim southee is a but of a worry in these conditions. I don't understand why they have to play two main fast bowlers. Play Boult, CDG and three spinners. That'll stretch the batting anyways. Wish we had a fast bowling all rounder like Stokes.

Not Terrible
If we are using a 3rd spinner to bowl 10 overs an innings, we may as well just have that be Williamson throwing down a few.

I was starting to feel like Santner was our spin equivalent of Larsen, but this is a much better comparison.

Except Southee is nowhere near as accurate as The Postman.

Funny - if you haven't heard he's been reported again.

So he ain't going to bowling much at all.

southee is by far our tallest bowler too, which will be important when we go to australia. at home and in asia lovely trenty and vargner can do the heavy lifting because they've worked out ways to be effective in most conditions but boulty is skiddy decent pace which will be dangerously hittable if he has a bad day and australian roads will be a new acid test for wagner's short man 10 over 135kph bouncer barrage. it works in asia and obviously in nz but will it work over there?

southee 2012-2014 sitting in the corridor at 140kph with the good bounce he got from 1.93m up and an accurate bouncer is the best suited to australian conditions we have short of blair tickner getting a surprise call up and succeeding or kyle jamieson finding an extra 10kph.

lockie has the express pace but not the height.

speaking of southee, he's the t20 skipper for this tour

Tim Southee (c)
Todd Astle
Tom Bruce
Colin de Grandhomme
Lockie Ferguson
Martin Guptill
Scott Kuggeleijn
Daryl Mitchell
Colin Munro
Seth Rance
Mitchell Santner
Tim Seifert (wk)
Ish Sodhi
Ross Taylor

i question tastle and rance as t20 players and they've gone back to bruce who i think is best in fc, but good to see mitchell and kugglejuggle have been retained. we need to see if kugglejuggle can continue the test standard 145kph version or go back down to the terrible 135kph version.

Hasn't Milne been playing T20s for Somerset over in the UK? Would've definitely preferred to see him over Rance. And no Neesham, which is strange given he's unlikely to be involved with the test side later this year so not *that* much in need of a break.

Others who turned out in T20s last season include Anderson, Phillips, Chapman, Tickner and Bracewell. Would be interested to know where they feature in the selectors' thoughts (aside from Bracewell).

Couple of surprising selections IMO, TAstle and T Bruce in particular. I second Moss' thoughts about Neesham. How has he not made it? Unless he excused himself which I doubt he would. Good to see Kane and Boult rested but Southee captaining the side? I doubt if he can keep his place in T20s. Really interested in see how Seifert goes in SL. He's a good enough player but need to see how he goes against spin. Tickener should have been tried in my opinion and not sure what T Bruce has done to get in the good books again. I can't for some reason remember any super smash games from last season.

Is that the end of Glenn Phillips? He's still very young but was hoping he was going to be the Big Mac for BCs.
