Crikey, Guptill looked utterly distraught when he holed out on 97. He took an age to drag himself off the ground.

Looked as though he shed a few tears, too.:-O

Having watched as many highlights as possible

Had the impression from here and elsewhere that Flynn played very loosely. I was imagining cover drives to not-quite-full-enough swinging balls from Roach and lots of slashes off the back foot, but it wasn't that bad. He was definitely a touch loose for an opener and a couple of shots should not have been played, but overall not too bad. I'm still a little concerned a few years of flogging domestic attacks mean he's no longer inclined to bat in the really disciplined, gritty way that gave him some success last time round - we'll wait and see on that.

Devo for Guptill. But well played and he still has three more innings (probably) this series to score that 100.

McCullum's shot to get out was woeful. That is not a test shot - not full enough to drive along the ground and just looked to hit the ball as hard as possible, no matter where it was going to go. If he plays like that, sometimes will be lucky but sometimes will not, and that's not what we need from a number 3.

Taylor's dismissal was disappointing just because he's our best batsman by miles and was well set. A little unlucky, really.

My hope is we score 380 - that's probably a 50 from Williamson, a 50 from Vettori (needs to get back in the runs) and a trusty 30 from Van Wyk. Brownlie just needs to spend some time in the middle.

Need to bat till tea, minimum.

The ideal scenario would be bat till tea and still have enough batting resources left to have a slog for an hour after tea, declare with 400+ on the board and have an hour to bowl at WI top order who are tired after nearly two days in the field.

From WI perspective this is really crunch time for Sammy. As this innings has shown, he isn't good enough to be the fourth bowler. Even his containing role isn't useful with Narine around. Hate to say it but he really needs wickets this test match, otherwise I can't see an argument for him playing. So many better bowling options out there.

There seems a collective disappointment in how McCullum played and was dismissed. There's no doubt his shot to be dismissed was very poor, but I don't believe McCullum to be a Test number three batsmen. I actually liked the intent he showed yesterday, the pitch wasn't really doing anything at that point and he wasn't willing to allow the bowlers to dictate proceedings with a disciplined, if not particularly threatening, line and length.

However, there's a fine line between positive intent and loose Test batting, the latter of which he fell into. He should be allowed that degree of freedom to play and for me should be coming in around 5 or 6 to allow him to express his uncontrollable attacking desires.

Rampaul nearly cleaning Williamson up with his first ball of the day. Think this is the type of pitch for Williamson to bat a long time, we know he has the requisite patience and temperament to wait for anything loose, while working it around. Hope so anyway cos I am a fan of his.

Hmmm, the pitches we got in the WI Tests - the second and third Tests especially - didn't seem to get especially harder to bat on. They seemed to slow down, basically.

Yes I was thinking about the possibility of this just going absolutely dead and difficult to get the 20 wickets you need. You wouldn't think that would be the case watching the bounce Narine is getting at the moment and with a very old ball.

New ball has to be taken pretty soon, Narine may get a bit of extra grip and bounce with that after the quicks have had a go.

Just 11 runs coming off the first 11 overs in today's play so far. Tough going against Narine especially, not easy getting the quicks away either. wonder what plans these NZ batsmen are formulating in their minds to get that board ticking, doesn't seem to be any real plans in place in order to score off Narine just yet.

Hope Williamson doesn't get frustrated. He's middled quite a few today but smashed them straight at fielders.

Yes especially his drives, they look to be coming out of somewhere near the middle of his bat. WI not going to make it any easier to score as they refuse to take the new ball and are changing the current ball for a similarly old ball.

KVW in ahead of Vettori?

Interesting.

So with the night watchman, Vettori finds himself batting at nine.
