Does anyone have any idea how fit Ryder actually is? He's obviously carrying a few but we've seen him play pretty long innings and run well between the wickets. Every time I see him bowl I can't help but think he could do a lot more bowling than he actually does - the only question would be his fitness insofar as bowling 15 overs a day and batting 5.

Oram's pretty similiar to O'Brien and Martin TBH - Ryder pitches it up more, gets a bit more movement through the air and genuinely adds more with the ball than Oram within the context of this team, IMO. If he can meet the fitness demands of bowling more (which is a big if, to be fair) I'd definitely be using him as a fifth bowler and picking the best four middle order batsmen available (as well as McCullum and Vettori cemented in at 7 and 8). I suppose the real issue with all that is that Oram probably has the strongest case to be the next best specialist middle order batsman anyway.

Patel on to bowl.

Lets see if he can prove some of his doubters wrong.

Personally - I wish he had more variations. Does he have an arm ball.

He is bowling around the wicket at the moment. I once met a county cricketer who bowled off spin and he used to preach the advantages of bowling around the wicket. Lets see if it works.

If we keep them below 450 I'll be pleased.

O'Brien and Martin should have picked up Mathews earlier, probably would have if they got at him earlier in their spells. 86 run partnership was pretty damaging.

Finally.

I hope we can take a cluster of wickets now.
2 wickets in 6 overs. Clustery enough for you?

Hasn't Patel played well. The young man talked himself up prior to this test and has delivered in cracking a chanceless century. Stroking a confident 4.8 runs off each over to be 104 not out on the second day.

Vettori on the other hand, poor is an understatement. Only 70 on the board, while having faced nearly twice as many overs as Patel. Unbelievably has been given out twice but somehow has managed to stay at the crease. His two runs per over and ability to lose his wicket has negated much of Patel's fine work. 72 for 2 my my my, hang your head in shame.

Hooray. Would be nice to get them all out for less than 500.

And another one. At least Martin and Vettori have redeemed themselves.
