stumps on Day 4

SL 91 runs behind with 4 wickets remaining - can't see it being anything but a draw....

well done to SL for hanging in there to save the match, well done to NZ for putting themselves in a position to win it!

Honours even at this stage.

Looks like one of the no results pitches.
I dont think Sri Lanka was under pressure trying to save the match.
Neither side can be dislodged in these kind of conditions.
Matt Horne, Sinclair and Attapattu missed out. All other batsmen got going.
Except for Attapattu, all other Lankan batsmen (Vaas is not top order), got fifties.

Reminds me of the India-Lanka match when Mahanama and Jayasurya batted out two days.
Azhar and Sachin had hit big tons and got out trying to push the scoring rate and win it. We ended up with 500 odd (I think). Lankans came out and made 900+ with NO intention of winning the game. Azza and Sachin must have kicked themselves for missing a double/triple each. So will Fleming in hindsight.

That was the worst test match I have ever seen.... it was like a match being exclusively created for the Sri Lankans to make entries into the record books... there was no other purpose to that match as far as the Sri Lankans were concerned.

I don't perticularly agree that this wicket is totally a dead flat track where easy batting is guarenteed. Its definitely a wicket that has no deamons for the batsman nevertherless Vitori and Wiseman got considerable turn on occation but could not sustain tight spells for anything more than 15 miniute spells and Styris/Bond/Tuffy gave away way too many hit me balls. In Addition, though New Zealand only lost 7 wickets in getting to 515 runs the Sri Lankens helped them generously by their attrocious fielding. The butter-fingered Lankens dropping close to 10 catchers. Fleming alone was dropped 4 times. If even 50 % of those chencers were taken It would have been a diffrent story.

Credit has to be given to the Sri Lanken's for their stratergic fightback to save the game. Sangakara, Kaluwitana and Even Jayawadena's selective aggression against Vitori and Bond did visibly upset the Kiwi spirits and rhythem while Tillekarana's Doggard defense mixtured with short bursts of attack had a tangible affect on the moral of the fielding team. Especially when Jayawadena was out in the very 1st over of the day, the Black Caps were visbly all pumped-up but Kaluwitana counter-attacked with so much gusto that when he reached 50 the Kiwis were looking sadly crestfallen.

Vettori takes 3 in 5 balls to finish off the tail. On the hatrick ball it was a very close LBW shout but Simno Taufel didn't give it :D . It was a faster one and it pitched on the middle and hit him in line of middle and was going to hit middle or leg stump. Good oppurtunity now for Horne now to make a good score.

Oh my god, please make this test end early..its so boring.

I see rain is meant to be drawing near.....

Fleming did really well in this test, apparently the pitch was turning viciously today & he played Murali & co really well.

At one stage NZ had 2 runners because both Fleming & Richardson were unable to run..talk about confusion..its hard enough with 1 runner.

NZ did not have the attack to bowl SL out cheaply enough on this pitch. Still I'm not disappointed by their 2nd innings dig on a 5th day turning pitch v Muri & Co.

Fleming continues to dominate & Horne made a solid 40 odd, while Sinclair continues to miss his opportunities. He must be under increased pressure to score well in the remianing Test.

I just hope that Fleming & Richardson recover in time to back up for the Test on Saturday.

If the pitch is much the same I do not expect any changes to the team unless as a result of injuries. If it is not such a turner then we may see Butler in for Wiseman.

I don't think we'll see any play today because there have been constant thunderstorms in Kandy.

I'd say NZ would be very happy to get out of Sri Lanka with a draw..but i'd still like to see some game time & maybe even a winner.

Sinclair complains that he's treated badly by the selectors & that his batting technique is not a problem but im afraid he's had alot of test matches now to get it right & his footwork will always be a problem against good international bowlers. If he's not willing to work on his technique then I think NZ need to move on from him & maybe even try Richard Jones in the 2nd test.

I was disappointed that NZ always seem to play 2 or 3 test match series.

If one is rained out it is pointless. We are going to end up with a drawn series...

I think if NZ continue to hold their 3rd place position for awhile we may see NZ gain more respect in tests.

Maybe NZ & Australia should re-ignite the Trans-Tasman trophy and play a 5 match series because I think NZ are capable of hanging in there against Australia.

I don't think anyone is capable of hanging in there over a 5 Test Series with Australia.

I would agree maybe if you said 3 test series because NZ are souch good fighters and hate to lose to us but in a five test series class will almost always win out in the end.

And even in a 3 test series New Zealand would need to actualy win the games to stop Australia because we dont deal in draws very often at all.

Well i think if anyone is capable of beating Australia then NZ will be the ones to do it. You look at the teams Player by Player then Aus are better but NZ always seem to rise over there.
If NZ had there best team there then it would be a great series.
NZ with Astle, Cairns and McMillan back to their best.

Bond would be a huge key. We have seen how much his game rises against the Aussies.

I agree with you about NZ being the only capable team, to an extent. India are also a big threat to the Aussies.....at home, but in Australia, NZ is the only team that seems to overcome the "minority" complex.

The way they've started today shows that there's no team to take them on!

13-3 in the 8th Over as I type!
