If Guptill can't score runs on this road then he's not going to fare any better in SA.

Would honestly open with a middle order batsman or Vettori ahead of him, but I've accepted it won't be happening and there aren't any openers scoring big domestically (damn our bowling depth) so I guess on the bright side we're going to have a gun slip in SA.
Long time Flem  I actually think typical South African conditions might just suit Guptill's style a little more There is more bounce, but it's generally consistent bounce so he should be able to hit through the line with relative confidence.

Not Terrible
You rate Guptill far too highly. He's a straight drive specialist, and that's it. Great attitude to the game and he will improve but he's no where near good enough right now, and our reserve middle order batsmen are better than him.
Vettori opening with the sort of form he's shown in the last year or two is utterly preposterous. Screwing around Flynn and Watling by making them open is a great way to ruin the development of those players.

Guptill is the best opening option we have right now. Just start hoping that either some other opener really stands up in the Plunket Shield or that he gets better, a quick fix isn't the way to address this issue.

You started this series with Franklin at six and when he was exposed you didn't bother picking a number six batsman at all, so lets not pretend the middle order depth is amazing. We don't know if Ryder will be available for South Africa and Vettori has been batting like a clown for the past 18 months so if there are middle order batsmen you're keen to get into the side (Watling, Brownlie, Cachopa, whoever), there will be places there for them without dropping Guptill or moving Flynn.

That's because they're outside the squad and the other reserve was Nicol, which in a roundabout way proves both our points because everyone agrees the reserve openers are a no no.

I wouldn't open with Flynn ftr. Lock him in at five or six.

Hypothetically if Dilshan has to bat lower down who opens with Pirana? My first thought was Mathews but then he's been SLs best batsman against the moving ball in this series and it might be best to have him lower as insurance since SL have collapsed twice.

Gutted. Stumped attempting a defensive shot? Did cricinfo get that right? Huge blow in terms of slowing the momentum for the Lankans.

Scenarios I'd be comfortable declaring on:

350-run lead at tea today.
300-run lead overnight.
250-run lead at lunch tomorrow.

Anything else and no. However we currently lead by 226 so I think a 350-run lead by tea or shortly after might be a realistic target and we could consider giving ourselves all day to bowl them out.

Yes that's right. All other options have been tried and have all failed.
