Persist with one, tell the other to go and get better. Thing is, if Vincent fails then we have no one left. I said at the start we had too many bowlers in the squad.

I still think they're the best options from what I've seen of the other NZ openers. They might not be very good, but they're still the best you have IMO.

Surprisingly enough he has never got that far (HS 189*), even Jason Gillespie has achieved that so IWT now would be as good as time as any.

It is suprising that someone of Kallis' calibre - so mentally strong has not been able to score a double century. His high score is 189* and I think whoever was the captain at the time declared on him. He was close to scoring a double century against Pakistan I think.

Either way, metnioning Gillespie doesn't really hold much water - he also outscored S & M Waugh, Martyn, Clarke and Hussey amonsgt numerous other teammates he played with.

300 partnership up between Amla and Kallis. For all the Amla haters, i think his position in the team is cemented for a while yet (add to the fact that he is being groomed to be the next SA captain - atleast thats what his Cricinfo profile says).

I need to do some reading for my exams, but just quickly, since Amla scored his century, Kallis has outscored him quite heavily. I think, since Amlha reached 100, Kallis has scored 80 and Amla only 30.

I'm probably the biggest "Amla hater" on this site (apart from possibly social) but I've been quite impressed with this innings. Even in the first innings when he made me a bundle by getting less than 20, he actually looked quite solid before getting out. His technique looks infinitely better than it did when he made his debut and he seems to be making small adjustments to it every series, always improving. I never thought I'd say this but I'm not totally against his selection ahead of McKenzie and Dippenaar anymore TBH. I still don't think he's a #3's backside though - to be fair, I think that could be the catalyst to his downfall so far a bit. He looks a poor player of swing bowling from what I've seen but he's a good timer of the ball and seems to have all the tools to be proficient against spin, especially as far as South African batsmen go. I think he'd go quite well down at 5 or 6, although, really, the same can be said for Gibbs and De Villiers, so it's a bit of a pickle.

Are you from the Richard's school of been tried, lets not try again? All 3, Amla, Dippenaar and McKenzie have similar stats at both FC and International level and Amla, other than age, has over things going for him (as I mentioned in my previous post - future captain. but with Smith and Prince being as young as they are...)

I do agree with the no. 3 thing though. I've never bought the whole 'number 3, best batsman' thing, but there is just something about having a debutant or yougnster in that positon that irks me.

And his day's only seem to come against the black caps, IIRC his maiden test ton was also against New Zealand where he scored 150 odd so he seems to like the New Zealand bowling attack i guess.
This Amla seems to manage to come up with these sort of ass saving knocks when he seems to be on the verge of being dropped.
