Oh right. Probably would've been dropped after bowling his usual trash in the first test though tbf.Southee was injured not dropped?
could it have been the ox block? What was that Final Fantasy weapon that the umpire was holding?
no space for McClenaghan once he's fit?Once everyone is fully fit, I'd like to see something like the following line-up;
Guptill
Latham
KW
Munro
Taylor
Neesham/Anderson
Watling
Santner
Southee/Henry (Sodhi if spinners deck)
Milne
Boult
Really happy with our opening combo, in particular Latham's ODI game atm. I like that it's relatively low-risk, yet he's still able to score quickly enough and Guptill of course is a proper player when it's the white ball.
I also wouldn't mind Taylor drifting down the order a little. We just can't afford him dotting up as much has he has been recently. I'd prefer him sliding down to 5 or even 6, with the goal that he comes in around the 35th over mark & plays more aggressively. He finally played some nice lap/sweep shots against the spinners yesterday, a shot he used to play very well yet seems to have put away in the last couple of years.
Anderson is another one like Taylor they need to work with to turn the strike over early in his innings if they're going to play him. I think competition between Anderson and Neesham should see them get the best out of one another.
Note that batting line-up has 4 left-handers in the top 8, which I think is a huge advantage.
Bowling wise, Milne is a lock if he's fit along with Boult, then it comes down to form between Southee, Henry & Bracewell for the 3rd seamers spot, or playing Sodhi if we're in the SC or playing on a turning track.
Munro is an absolute must, I still think he's potentially the most destructive short-form bat we have in the country, but we must accept he won't come off every time. He's kind of the NZ Maxwell in that respect, but we have enough cake-like players in there with Latham, KW, Taylor and Watling.
Probably not in the 50 over form, but definitely in T20s. Really seems to be a T20 specialist big Mitch, although I wouldn't discard him completely.no space for McClenaghan once he's fit?
Yes... I know this team hold onto people till the bitter end. But SURELY there is no more Ronchi? Surely!?!?Guptill

^ that should be our nearest 15 to the ODI side. Would like to see a few of the younger domestic bats start to put up their hand for the ODI team as well. Reckon our bowling depth is quality but concerned about the batting.
Nicholls did pretty okay in his opportunities earlier in the year, so I'm surprised he isn't in the squad here. Would have certainly gone better than Anderson and Ronchi.Yes... I know this team hold onto people till the bitter end. But SURELY there is no more Ronchi? Surely!?!?
Plus there are some guys around who can hopefully make a bit of noise?
Bruce? Worker? Young? Anyone else?
Good news about that is that pretty much the entire squad should be around by 2019. Gives you time to get a young domestic bat (or Henry Nicholls) to add to the depth.Guptill

Yeah I quite like Nicholls as a 50-over batsman. Corey's certainly never going to cut out enough of his biffing to cover or mid-off to average 41 in List A.Nicholls did pretty okay in his opportunities earlier in the year, so I'm surprised he isn't in the squad here. Would have certainly gone better than Anderson and Ronchi.
Definitely a vacancy for biffer-in-chief at number 7 - you're asking Anderson to adapt his game to do that, which is one approach. There's noone that easily slots in there and could equally could ask Munro or Neesham to adapt to that role, or get whoever the best boundary hitter in domestix to do it (dunno, Bruce?). Santner isn't it - does quite well at finding ones and twos at the end and placing the occasional boundary, so good for a supporting role, but not the main striker.Guptill

I don't think it's right to ask Neesham to do that, he could develop the way Oram did (kind of) and play proper Test innings as well as being a hitting option in ODI/T20s. And anyway, Manu is the best striker in the country if you don't consider Gup when he's set. Considering the big leap Manu made over the last 12-18 months I'd expect him to keep developing and be a mainstay in ODIs and T20s. Has done reasonably well in franchise cricket around the world too where there's also pressure to perform.Definitely a vacancy for biffer-in-chief at number 7 - you're asking Anderson to adapt his game to do that, which is one approach. Where does Nicholls fit into a fully fit NZ ODI XI though?Yeah I quite like Nicholls as a 50-over batsman. Corey's certainly never going to cut out enough of his biffing to cover or mid-off to average 41 in List A.
Depends on how you want to balance your top 7. That line-up I posted has 4-5 relatively solid cake-like batsmen in Latham, KW, Taylor & Watling & (possibly even Guptill when he's in top ODI form).Yeah I don't like Munro overseas. Only a 22 average and one 50+ score for Munro in 26 innings in the T20 Blast stuff since 2014, which seems very low. Even James Franklin's been a bit of a ballstriking colossus in that Caribbean T20.
