Do it twice and you're out imo. It's the same for bowlers isn't it?
The theory behind running on the pitch is that it scuffs up the pitch.

A batsman doing it is basically just making life harder for himself and his teammates, so he isn't given out for doing it, and the bowling side are gifted 5 runs to compensate for having to come out and bat on the wicket that's getting scuffed.

A bowler doing it is basically giving himself an advantage deliberately, and so gets taken off the attack.

I'm not quite a big fan of how this is handled either tbh; but it's something that is easily controlled and doesn't happen too frequently so I don't see a rule change happening unless some people find a way to abuse it.

Nah mate... bowlers can scuff up the pitch when they are batting to help themselves. That is pretty much the shittiest you can get to be and that is what Jaddu was doing. He deserves to cop more than just a 5 run penalty and 50% of his match fee.

Manjrekar made a surprisingly good point about how run penalties work so much better than just fines. The moment the 5 run penalty was given out, Jadeja was ensuring he was not running down the pitch even for his first step out of the crease while running. So obviously, he can do it if he wants to, he just chooses to run straight down coz the penalties are lenient till then.

BTW, I think Jadeja was doing it deliberately compared to earlier when Virat ran across the pitch as he had almost run into Rahane while taking the first. The umpires had a word with him and he never repeated it again. That is how it should be done, tbh.

Not if they're about to start bowling in 5 minutes it doesn't. To be fair though, Banshee immediately stopped running on the wickets after the umpires signalled the penalty, so it did seem to do its job.

What if he just continued running on it? Can they actually ban him from bowling. What's stopping Jadeja from continuing to be a dick and copping 5 run penalties but scuffing up the pitch more and more each time?

The fact that Kohli seemed pissed at the first 5 run penalty itself... Watching the game helps, you know...

So the only thing stopping Jadeja was his captain looking annoyed at 5 measly runs being deducted?

If they can't ban the player doing it in some way, it leaves it open for abuse. No ones going to do it because it's too ******, but theoretically, one could just keep running down the middle of the pitch until it's a minefield. It's not as though getting 500 instead of 550 is going to hurt the team batting first if the pitch gets stuffed up.

Yes.. And I agree with you. That is why I said the penalty should be heavier in my earlier post. But in this case though, it helps that Kaptain Kohli seemed to have been annoyed by the penalty and it helped stop the nonsense immediately.

Is that the first time a team has incurred a runs penalty in a test match for an offence like that?

They can't do anything else under the laws.

https://www.lords.org/mcc/laws-of-cricket/laws/law-42-fair-and-unfair-play/

This covers the damaging the pitch aspect.

14. Batsman damaging the pitch

(a) If either batsman causes avoidable damage to the pitch, at the first instance the umpire seeing the contravention shall, when the ball is dead, inform the other umpire of the occurrence. The bowler’s end umpire shall then

(i) warn both batsmen that the practice is unfair and indicate that this is a first and final warning. This warning shall apply throughout the innings. The umpire shall so inform each incoming batsman.

(ii) inform the captain of the fielding side and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of what has occurred.

(b) If there is any further instance of avoidable damage to the pitch by any batsman in that innings, the umpire seeing the contravention shall, when the ball is dead, inform the other umpire of the occurrence. The bowler’s end umpire shall then

(i) disallow all runs to the batting side from that delivery other than the penalty for a No ball or a Wide, if applicable.

(ii) additionally, award 5 penalty runs to the fielding side.

(iii) return the batsmen to their original ends.

(iv) inform the captain of the fielding side and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of what has occurred.

(c) The umpires together shall report the occurrence as soon as possible after the match to the Executive of the batting side and to any Governing Body for the match who shall take such action as is considered appropriate against the captain and player or players concerned.
Basically it seems the umpires cant do anything other than levy penalty runs against the side damaging the pitch during the game, but there will be repercussions after the game is done.

I would hope those repercussions are harsh enough to dissuade anyone from doing what you suggested, But yea, not much else the Umpires can do under the laws.

I suspect the situation you describe would fall under the following too:

18. Players’ conduct

If there is any breach of the Spirit of the Game
either in the case of an unfair action not covered by the Laws, under 2 above,
or by a player,
either failing to comply with the instructions of an umpire,
or criticising an umpire’s decisions by word or action,
or showing dissent,
or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into disrepute,
the umpire concerned shall immediately report the matter to the other umpire.

The umpires together shall,

(i) inform the player’s captain of the occurrence, instructing the latter to take action.

(ii) warn him of the gravity of the offence, and tell him it will be reported to higher authority.

(iii) report the occurrence as soon as possible after the match to the Executive of the player’s team and to any Governing Body responsible for the match, who shall take such action as is considered appropriate against the captain and player or players and, if appropriate, team concerned.
But that again would only see repercussions happen after the game, not during.

I want to know if India is the first side to be docked penalty runs for this unsportsmanlike behaviour (running on the wicket, not dropping Guptill and prolonging every NZ fan's misery).
