***Official*** New Zealand in India 2012

That was India's day. We need to look for a lead of 50.
Yep, any sort of lead and especially something like that and New Zealand are screwed. Basically if New Zealand are any chance in this match we'll need one of the quicks to get hot (or for Boult's luck to change) and roll India with the new ball fairly quickly, ideally with some sort of lead on the board. Looks unlikely at this stage but it needs to happen, no chance in hell the batsmen will be able function being in the negative to begin.

Was going through Tendulkar's last innings, it's been 24 innings that he scored a century. Never in entire career he had such a long gap, highest was 17 innings gap in 2005/2006 season. Only six half centuries in 24 innings is a worry but I'm sure he'll come back

Think it's time the selectors tell Sehwag to have a "break" from tests. He's coming up to 34 and is style of batting is such that I can't see him being consistent any more opening the innings. He doesn't have the temperment, or he can't fall back on the sound technique of a Dravid or Tendulkar for example seeing as he's very much a "see ball hit ball" type of player, and his eyes will be going.

I say send him back to state to bat in the middle order and if he gets runs then there should possibly be an opening for him to come back to the test team at 5 or 6.

He's nowhere near the player he was a couple of years ago but he's still doing enough to comfortably hold the opening slot considering nobody's pushing for it tbh. Gambhir's closer to the chopping board and I'd still give him the next 2 important home series' at least.

Sehwag's 40-60 innings these days feel more infuriating and banal than similar innings by conventional openers simply because we have a sub-conscious bias to rate a 'gritty' knock of 40-60 by an out of form conventional player but not to rate an inappropriately audacious knock for the same runs by someone like Sehwag when he's out of form.

Sehwag's problems as of now have less to do with technique and more to do with lack of form/confidence, in my opinion. He'll not have a great time in the middle order as of now either. Sehwag at his peak in the middle order would probably have been unstoppable though. I can understand why they did not want to disturb an opening career which worked so brilliantly but all the technical factors pointed towards the move and even Sehwag wanted the middle-order spot.

Well, surely if he's lacking in form/confidence as you state, then he should still be considered for the chop? Being out of form may not just be a 'phase' - but something more permenant. As I stated, Sehwag doesn't have much uppside because of the way he bats, if that makes sense, i.e I can't see him being as good as he once was.

Didn't he have a good spell away from test cricket before being recalled in one of the tests last summer v England?

Probably Franklin. If team management have no qualms with Franklin playing at six they shouldn't have one with Vettori IMO, especially in Sri Lanka where he's had success with the bat (and ball tbf.)

Blah, blah, blah that isn't fair on Franklin. Since coming back into international cricket as a "batting all rounder" he's been next to hopeless for this team, with bat and especially ball. Averages 21 with a single 50 and a whopping 140 with the ball, offering next to no control either. Dean Brownlie is probably just as much as an all rounder as Franklin is tbh, and I'm kind of being half serious when I say that.

I wouldn't play Patel either tbf, drop him and play the four seamers. Still looks the same Jeetan Patel that averages nigh on 50 to me, and at least with bringing in Wagner we'll have a decent tail. Bracewell, Wagner, Southee, Boult. On most occasions you'll get some pretty decent runs out of that lot.
Yeah there's going to be an element of 'not fair' for whoever gives way to Vettori. Franklin's first test first innings looked composed and controlled, and then his dismissal this test makes you wonder why you'd bothered. Needs runs second innings here.

Frankly it's hard to see any of our bowlers being effective if the Lankan pitches are similar to last time we were there. Four seamers is surely excessive for Sri Lankan conditions but then who can see Patel or Vettori taking wickets?

It's going to be depressing later today when India's spinners come on and immediately start getting some turn and bounce. Patel's only bowled a handful of balls that did that (including the Raina stumping no ball).

We need at least three wickets early today with the new ball so that India end up roughly even. Then probably need another Taylor century. Reckon McCullum will try to emulate Taylor when he comes out to bat second innings - should be interesting.

because he is average.
Two spinners bowling together in a spell as short as 5 overs would have been something different and a wicket might have fallen if we tried to over attack the part timer. Strange that it was not even tried yesterday.

YES! Plumb.

Beautiful ball. Four for Southee - excellent return to the side for him.

Didn't see the previous balls in the over, but anyhow what a misjudgement from Kohli. Was he bowling outters the rest of the over?
