You want to play moderately positive cricket then you enforce the follow on. You want to give the opposition zero chance of winning even if it reduces yours then bat again. No one should be surprised by this. To do anything different after not enforcing the follow on would be dumb. Edit: and on that note they declare. I think they were wrong not to enforce the follow on but this is a fine declaration.

usually rain is for pussies but in this case i would quite enjoy seeing some water descend on england for that batting effort.

Urgh, finally. That was an awful passage of play. NZ couldn't even be arsed trying to slow down the declaration by bowling real bowlers.

Nah that's completely wrong. You'd have declared with a 320 lead and at least 80 overs left? Seriously?

It was only the half hour after lunch that was clearly not needed.
Two hours before I made that post was the drinks' break

Bit harsh to criticize Rutherford for playing that shot

If he puts that in the locker completely then he hands a big advantage to the bowler as he wont be playing his natural game

Doesn't come close to outweighing the advantage he hands to the bowler by driving through the off side when the ball is swinging and there's 5 in the cordon.

EDIT: Can just imagine Broad seeing him play that shot and thinking "aw crap, he's playing his natural game! bad news for us."

Well, there's all the stuff about putting pressure back on the bowler, as little as that may be etc etc, but there's also the point that if he puts that way, then he becomes slightly pointless
