i wonder how much of taylors genuine pace average doull mentions is south africa related? his record against them is terrible, whereas he has had good knocks against your australians, pakistanis etc.

Stick a fork in Taylor he's done
nz have never been in the position before where they can afford to discard established players. new zealands best side, selected ruthlessly, has either blundell/young/rachin opening and conway sliding to #4 with taylor out or taylor sliding to #6, watling #7 with someone new entering the top 5.

he's 37, there's no shame in not being quite test standard anymore, but nz are not used to this position and nzc have history with both pissing off senior players without need under bracewell and screwing taylor himself over with the captaincy thing.

Loathe to write Taylor off but if he's planning to continue his test career beyond this month would want a serious consideration about dropping to 5 or 6.

Reminds me of the Tendulkar scenario in the last 2-3 years of his career, the runs dried up but apparently moving down from no.4 was never an option.

I was just thinking he's starting to look a bit like late-career Ponting, with how off the pace he is (but not quite that bad yet).

No one's position in a side is guaranteed in my view. Him being an established player doesn't hold any weight imo. This is international sport, it's not the Dog and Duck 5th XI where a past his prime player carries on indefinitely irrespective of how he performs.

He's had a wonderful career, played over a 100 tests and been a quality performer for the large proportion of his career. But he's done at this level now. Do NZ not want to drop a player (who's been a great servant and role model) because it might hurt his feelings a bit and lead to fractured relationships within the team? Bizarre

Nah, the guy deserves to play the WTC final for all the stuff he's put up with his whole career, I don't give a **** if he's not in the best XI.
