The goal will be tp bat for a couple of days I think. That will leave us two days to bowl them out. The bowling out I think can be done in two days, but the batting for two days bit will be tricky. Still, no point being negative before it begins. This is the acid test for our top six. Success means they cement their place, failures in this series will likely mean trouble.

It is interesting though... how many bad results either personally or individually before members of this Australian team have their places in danger, who are they, and how long do they have? Other than the obvious of Watson/Krejza.
Depends on what time frame you go by, and probably should wait until after the RSA series before making any 'big' changes.

The Australians in 2008.

Obviously, the Aussies had a poor tour of India, but the guys who did poorly in that series should be given the home series to get back into form and stablise their place. In the current team playing, Johnson and Watson are the ones with question marks over their heads, although I feel Watson has been rightly retained because of his good bowling in India, but of all the people in the side he will be the first one to go if he doesn't at least outperform Johnson. All the batsmen average over 40, while the good bowlers have averaged no more than 32, with Clark and Lee's averages taking a hit in the India series but still looking very respectable.

katich would be the first to be under scrutiny, he's just that unlucky sort of bloke, like langer, he's had it his whole career... clark is getting that way a bit too, god only knows why, must be age and failing body/declining pace
Wouldn't be surprised. To bastardise a Sean Fuller quote, the guy could go out and score a run a ball hundred and would still be under scrutiny.

Hayden, Symonds and Johnson should all be made held accountable for the poor results. But the australian selectors have never had too make too many huge changes due to its strength and dominance. But teams such as South Africa, England have had to make those decisions and its about time the australians do too.
Symonds saved Australia in the WIndies with the bat, and he made a start here in Brisbane. Unless you mean poor results in India because he wasn't playing, because he would've been the X factor to help Australia win 4-0?

hayden will need to be dragged out, he will play until 40 if he's allowed, having said that, he may go out and bash another hundred in the second innings, he just doesn't strike me as wanting to quit anytime soon.

clarke, johnson and watson the only members of the team under 30, in fact, probably the only members under 32
Solution to both problems? Get in Phil Hughes

Yeah, I guess I can see where you're going with Katich, but I think he at least has a grace period now that Jaques is out for a while. Personally, I wonder how Hayden long is going to go on for if he doesn't do well, although I think his ODI spot is under a bit more threat than his test.

I guess Clark and Lee, just due to their ages, must be in some sort of danger.
Certainly an odd situation, given how good Clark has been in his career, and how Lee performed before the India series. Even with that, he's statistically been Australia's best bowler this year with 44 wickets @ 31.27.

i think there's certain untouchables in this team leading up to the 2009 ashes regardless of results or form

ponting, clarke, hussey, lee, and to a lesser extent hayden and symonds
This. Can see them making the Ashes no matter what, but after that it'll probably be gold watch or back to domestic cricket for the underperformers.

Ponting if he has a bad series as both batsman/captain.

None of them look completely safe, may be except Hussey.

Us batting for two days will be unlikely unless rain intervenes. Our batting line up is slightly dominated by 'stroke makers' rather than 'grafters'. Flynn is the one who will be able to occupy the crease longest, while Taylor, Ryder, How, McCullum and Vettori have a better chance of making big scores at a decent strike rate, but I don't see them making big ones (i.e. 150+).

Edit: I can see us batting out the day, and getting all out after lunch tomorrow, though. Plenty of time to make 300.

NZ to get 280/290, should be a great match. I think everyone would be pretty happy this isn't another 550+ first innings yawnfest (though another 80 or so runs would have been nice :p)

I didn't realise you could do that with Statsguru, that's really cool.

Yeah, I see what you're saying now with the averaging over 40. And interesting that it's probably the two least established players who have the really good averages.

I can't see any way Watson will be playing the next test unless he produces a match-winning hundred in the second innings, in which case the selectors will have to start thinking creatively. I was more thinking the other 10 players, who are the 'established' to a greater/lesser extent.

Yeah, given Watson's place was undecided in the lead up to this Test, he'll be the on to go unless he pulls out a hundred or a 5fer.

Luckily for everyone here I will be heading out to watch this on Sky, so you will be without my genius insight :p

Seemed to be bowling pretty rapid when I was over in Aussie a month or so ago.
I was going by this stuff... but I don't know whether it's that serious. I think he's missed the last couple of games for Qld.

"Despite his occasional back soreness, Noffke insists his condition can be managed through injections and physiotherapy. “It’s a bit hard to explain but basically the back pain comes because my left leg is shorter than my right leg,” he explained.

“It gives me nerve pain and over the past two or three years, I’ve had a few injections into my facet joints to settle things.

“I get the pain every now and then. Hopefully these needles keep hitting the spot because I want to play every game.”

Noffke was troubled by pain on Australia A’s recent tour of India, and the problem has continued during Queensland’s domestic season so far, but has continued to play."

Is it a 1/2 hour early start today coz of overs lost yesterday?

If so, I have to end a conference early to watch it.

I doubt it, due to the fact that there was more rain in Brisbane overnight. If anything, play will be delayed half an hour again I'd say.

Weather in Brisbane at the moment is supposed to be pretty good. I don't think it rained nearly as much as it did the night before so play may get underway on time. I hope so anyway!!!

Must say, given he usually contributes to just about every thread, surprised to see no Richard posts in this one
