Just a quick thought on the Australian opening situation, is Michael Hussey not an opener? I had the impression he played the majority of his domestic cricket there before finally being selected for Australia.
yep, he can pretty much bat anywhere equally effectively

but need him down there IMO...great finisher to the innings (or resurrector)

HMMM. Have Australia learnt nothing, rested players from the CH series last year and lost.

The Series is still alive and the most destructive batsman has been removed from the equation. New Zealands bowlers will feel better for not seeing Gilchrist walk out to bat on Thursday. New Zealand do have McCullum and Oram so its still possible a big score could be made and a quick run rate from Gilly may be needed.

If the series were over I would have thought it would be a good idea but its not and the best team wont be out there again.

And its not like he played on Sunday for that matter either.

Rested players from the CH and won the World Cup, the far more important tournament, comfortably. Resting senior players is about keeping the eye on the future.

The resting policy has worked for us more often than not. And if a break like this prolongs Gilly's career, then I'm all for it.

Very well said mate, a good team needs to take such decisions and back those decisions if something goes wrong (like it did in the previous C-H series) while trying to execute them, the 4 match test series is far more important than the C-H series, and if the Australian team management had decided well before the start of this series that they will rest Gilly in the 3rd Odi to have him ready for the boxing day test than what's wrong with it....??
Anyways now i know Haddin wasn't just picked in the squad to cool his heels in this series it was obviously pre-decided that he would play in the XI for the 3rd Odi.

Haha, so he thinks Gilchrist is being officially dropped? Oh dear...

When are New Zealand going to get rid of this buffoon?
He is just trying to play mind games with Aussies... thats it...

At first on Tait and now going on Gilly( a senior player)

Any particular reason?

It's only for one game anyway whilst Gilchrist is being rested, so I can't see any reason not to give Hussey his debut for Australia. Clarke has shown in the past the he can open the batting with reasonable success, which opens up a middle-order spot for the 3rd ODI.

Errmm... wicket keeping much?

The obsession with plugging Hussey's case at every possible turn is becoming very 8-)-worthy.

Much like some posters' obsession with Shane Watson, really.

"Ooo look, Shane Watson farted and knocked over a bail! Get him the Test/ODI/World XI side! Is there nothing he can't do?!"

Yeah Clarke could do well opening the batting as he has done in the past (except for two ducks recently in India) but still he is too valuable for us as a no.4, he holds things together brilliantly while batting in the middle-order, rotates the strike well and builds big partnerships through the middle overs and he doesn't let the spinners settle down into a rhythm either, so i would prefer having him at 4.
Pup needs to be there for Vettori and Patel..he is our best player of spin

we put him as opener in India and Kartik ran through us

We have Bracewell for another 2 years. I love the Black Caps but if we lose to England in the upcoming test series, I hope we get absolutely caned.

It's the only way we we will get rid of this joker.
